Member Initiatives for 2010

Proposals Due February 1, 2010

ASA members and groups are invited to submit proposals for initiatives that support the mission of the Association and will be considered for funding and implementation in 2010.

General Guidance

  • Funds are intended for projects that fit within the mission of the ASA and are designed to strengthen our profession.
  • We look favorably on pilot projects that can be extended to the Association as a whole or to other large groups within ASA (e.g., other Chapters or other Sections).
  • We look for proposals that can impact many members, not just a few.
  • We do not look favorably on projects that would normally be funded by other sources, such as conferences or research that could be funded by NSF, NIH, CDC, ARO, or foundations.
  • Chapter and section projects having a positive impact on the broader membership are eligible for funding, whereas routine chapter or section activities should be funded by their respective treasuries.
  • Requests for start-up funds are viewed more favorably than requests for continuing support for routine projects.
  • We welcome proposals that address how their activities could extend beyond the funding period or how their outcomes could help another group.
  • We strongly favor initiatives that can turn into ongoing activities that the ASA supports for all its members.
  • We strongly favor initiatives that can be submitted for more extensive funding from another agency to broaden the scope or target audience.
  • Salary support will not be approved for funding.

Additional Evaluation Considerations

  • Are the goals and outcomes clearly stated?
  • Does the proposal serve a well-defined audience?
  • Is the proposal sponsored by an ASA organization (e.g., Chapter, Section, Council governing board, or Committee)?
  • Is the proposal a well-developed plan (and more than a good idea)?
  • Does the project leverage activities or resources from other ASA and non-ASA groups?
  • Will there be sufficient people and time to complete the project successfully? Is there a strong leader or champion for the project?

Feedback

The Chair of the ASA Budget Committee or designee will contact each applicant with the results of the review of the submitted proposal. A brief written summary of the results will be provided to all who apply, whether or not their proposals are funded.

Reports

Each applicant who receives funding for a Member Initiative is expected to submit a brief report to the Budget Committee Chair by January 31 of the following year. This report will be reviewed by the ASA Budget Committee.

Funding Period

  • The funding period is April 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011.
  • The ASA Board only approves one year of funding at a time.

Carry-over Funding

If a Member Initiative proposal is approved for funding, but, in fact, all funds approved for that proposal are not expended during the funding period, then the applicant may request to spend the remaining funds in the next year. However, this will be approved only in extraordinary circumstances.

A report as described above should be submitted along with a brief request for that carry-over funding to Steve Porzio by October 15th. This request will be considered by the Executive Director.
