I would like to update you on several activities our chapter will be
involved during this year.
On Saturday, April 8th, we will award prizes for "Best Use of
Statistics" at the New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair (Socorro,
NM). A first, second and third place will be awarded amongst the Senior
Division projects. Prizes will include a plaque for the school, as well
as a certificate and some cash ($60 for first place, $30 for second
place) for the student. Information on the science fair can be found at
http://infohost.nmt.edu/~science/fair/.
You will also find a
description of last year's experience at http://www.amstat.org/chapters/Albuquerque/scifair.html.
Thanks to an
ASA grant received last year (from the ASA Section on Statistics
Education) and generous donations from our members, we should be able
to offer this recognition to our high school students in the following
years.
As for last year, we would appreciate any help from our members willing
to be part of the judging team. March 10th 2006
Thanks to the efforts of our current Chapter representative, we are now
affiliated with mu-sigma-rho, the national statistics honorary society.
Undergraduate and graduate students fulfilling the qualifications
criteria can now become members of the society through our chapter (see
http://www.amstat.org/chapters/Albuquerque/msr.html
for more
details). We think that this affiliation will be beneficial for our
profession by increasing the interest of undergraduate and graduate
students in statistics. So far, only students from University of New
Mexico have applied for membership, but I would strongly encourage
members of other universities in New Mexico to advertise this
opportunity to their students. Deadline for application (with
transcripts) is March 15th for this year.
We plan to organize a chapter meeting on Thursday or Friday during the
last three weeks of September. The meeting will be held in or close to
Santa Fe, as it seems to be the most convenient location for most of
our members. Due to the success of last year's meeting, we plan to
propose again this year a mix between general and technical talks. We
will give you more details as soon as they are available.
Alyson Wilson from Los Alamos has been maintaining our chapter's
website up to this year. We sincerely thank her for her dedication and
help while she was no longer an officer. Our chapter representative,
the new webmaster, has updated the webpage for this year's event.
You can visit it at http://www.amstat.org/chapters/Albuquerque/.
As a concluding remark, I will remind you that this chapter is your
chapter, and it is part of our duty, as officers, to promote or develop
anything that could be useful or beneficial to the chapter or, more
generally, statistics in New Mexico. If you have any ideas, suggestions
or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us. You will find below
the names and e-mails of all current chapter members.

Chapter Members:
I'd like to update you on three chapter events that will be happening
over the next several months.
First, several individuals from the chapter will be traveling to the
New Mexico Science and
Engineering Fair in Socorro on April 9 to judge entrants in the Senior
Division for a "Best Use of Statistics" award. We will award
prizes for first, second, and third places. All prizes include a
plaque and certificates; first also includes $60 and second $30.
We have received a $500 grant from the ASA Section on Statistics
Education to help cover the cost of prizes for this year and next year.
Second, as part of the ASA Traveling Short Course program, Tim
Hesterberg will be presenting a short course entitled "Bootstrap
Methods and Permutation Tests for Doing and Teaching Statistics."
Details have yet to be arranged; we are hoping to hold the course in
April in the Albuquerque area.
Third, the date of our annual meeting has been set for Friday,
September 16. Speakers tentatively include Bob Mason, a past
president of ASA; current president Fritz Scheuren; and president-elect
Sallie Keller-McNulty. Several slots for chapter members to speak have
also been included in the program.
I'll keep you posted with the details of these events as they become
available.
Sincerely,
Sarah Michalak
