Each year the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association presents the Don Owen Award to a statistician who embodies the three-fold accomplishments of Professor Owen: excellence in research, statistical consultation, and service to the statistical community. Nominations are solicited from all American Statistical Association chapters.

For 2003, the San Antonio Chapter announces outstanding Don Owen Award winner, Dr. Boris Iglewicz of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The award, which includes a plaque and $500, was presented at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas on April 4, 2003 at the Conference of Texas Statisticians. Following the award presentation at the conference banquet, Dr. Iglewicz presented a talk on "Alternative Medicine Trials: Personal Reflections" which reflected on his work on an National Institutes of Health (NIH) data safety monitoring board which advises on multiple clinical trials that study the efficacy of alternative medicines and practices.

The Don Owen Award, cosponsored by the Dekker Foundation, is named for Donald B. Owen, who, before his death in 1991, was Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Professor Owen's long and extremely productive career, including research, consultation, and service, is the ideal against which nominees are compared. The distinguished career of Dr. Iglewicz exhibits such excellence in statistical research, statistical consultation, and service to the statistical community.

Originally educated as a mathematician, Dr. Boris Iglewicz received his Ph.D. in Statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1967 and is now Professor of Statistics and Director of the Biostatistics Research Center at Temple University where he has taught since 1969. Dr. Iglewicz has co-authored two books, chapters in two others, and has published over 40 refereed articles in a wide variety of statistical journals. He has served on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Quality Technology and has supervised 17 Ph.D. dissertations, many of which won awards from the ASA. Dr. Iglewicz is active in statistical consulting, currently serving as the Vice President of ANSTAD Corporation, and is a member of a NIH Data Safety Monitoring Board. Among his numerous professional honors, Dr. Iglewicz is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and Senior Member of the American Society for Quality. Dr. Iglewicz has played an active role in supporting the mission of the ASA as well as the Philadelphia Chapter by serving as either Chapter President or Vice President from 1979 to 1983.

The San Antonio Chapter is proud to recognize the accomplishments of Dr. Boris Iglewicz by honoring him with the 2003 Don Owen Award.
