We will gather afterwards at Mimi’s Cafe for happy hour and dinner at 6 pm. Dinner will consist of soup or salad, entrée, dessert and beverage for $15. A vegetarian option will also be available. Amstat News Items about Chapter's Activities and Members
- The June 2011 issue of Amstat News contained two articles about the Chapter's activities.
- The 2011 Don Owen Award was presented to Dr. Dennis K. J. Lin, university distinguished professor in the department of statistics at Penn State University. The award, given by the San Antonio Chapter, is sponsored by Taylor and Francis publishing group.
- The Council of Texas Statisticians (COTS) sponsored an award at the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair (EMTSEF). The fair was held in San Antonio, Texas at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center on April 2, 2011. The award was for “The Best Use of Statistics in a Science Project”. A team of judges from the San Antonio Chapter that helped select three senior high division projects that showed excellence in the use and knowledge of statistical methods included Keying Ye, John Schoolfield, Danny Sharon, Ken Williams, Michael Lecocke, Pete Donahoe, David Han, and Howard Monroe. - The November 2010 issue of Amstat News contained a Call for Nominations for the 2011 Don Owen Award.
- An article announcing the 2010 Don Owen Award winner, Rice University's Javier Rojo, has been posted on ASA's website.
- The May 2010 issue of Amstat News contained an article about ASA President Sastry Pantula's visit to the Chapter on March 29th and his talk "GIVE to ASA."
- The September 2009 issue of Amstat News contained an interview with UTSA's Nandini Kannan.
- ASA President, Tony Lachenbruch, invited two former ASA Presidents, including San Antonio's Bob Mason, to reminisce about their terms in his November 2008 President's Corner article in Amstat News.
- The October 2008 issue of Amstat News
reported on individual and team winners at the JSM's Stat Bowl 2008. The University of Texas at San Antonio team (John Garza and Dan Polhamus) came out as the team winners.
- The June 2008 issue of Amstat News contained two articles that reported on activities of the Chapter.
- The first article, entitled Best Use of Statistics Awards Given at Science Fairs, summarized the Chapter's awards for projects that showed excellence in the use of statistical methods. The Chapter's made awards at the 2008 Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair as well as the 2008 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair. This article also summarized the activities at the 2008 Conference of Texas Statisticians which was hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio.
- The other article featured the Don B. Owen Award. The recipient in 2008 was N. "Bala" Balakrishnan, a professor of statistics at McMasters University in Canada. This was awarded at the 2008 Conference of Texas Statisticians.
- The November 2004 issue of Amstat News
contains an article entitled
San Antonio Brothers Mix Science and Statistics With Winning Results. It features Wesley and Julian Hong.

- Tuesday, June 29, 2004: Bob Mason, the only San Antonio
chapter member to ever serve as the national ASA president, spoke
on the future of statistics. His talk included a portion of his Presidential
Address given at the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings. He also
provided an "insider's view" on what it's like to be the ASA president.
This dinner meeting was held at Alamo Café at 7 PM.
- Thursday January 22, 2004: A "Micro-JSM" meeting was held
in Lecture Hall 3.102A at the Medical School of the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair Winners

- 2008: The Chapter sent volunteer judges to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair which was held at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center on April 11th. Judges who helped select projects in the senior division that showed the best use of statistics were Chris Shang, Pete Donahoe, Carolyn Oakley, Howard Monroe and Norma Ketchum. The Council of Texas Statisticians provided the monetary awards. Awards were:
- First place and a $250 savings bond went to the team of Steven Schroeder and Huzeifa Badshah both from Health Careers High School (San Antonio) for their project "Minimizing Lawn Mower Emissions".
- Second place and a $150 savings bond went to Vivian Lee from Vista Ridge High School (Cedar Park, TX near Austin) for her project "A Study of Varying Harmonic Spectrum Exposure on Students' Concentration as Assessed via Fourier Analyses and Various Statistical Tests".
- A tie for third place and a $100 savings bond went to each of Neela Thangada from Keystone High School (San Antonio) for her project "Identifying Genes Responsible for Resistance against Powdery Scab Disease in the Solanum Tuberosum Using Semi-Quantative Polymerace Chain Reaction" and to Stephanie Simcox from McGregor High School (McGregor, TX near Waco) for her project "Effects of Antioxidants in Response to Ultraviolet Radiation in Drosphila Melanogaster."
- 2007: The San Antonio Chapter sent volunteer judges to the 2007 Texas State Science Fair held in San Antonio on April 6th. High school projects from all over the state were reviewed for excellence in the use of statistical methods by Howard Monroe, Johnny Weismuller and Norma Ketchum. First place and a $250 savings bond went to Kenneth Barshop of San Antonio (Alamo Heights High School) for his project titled “AIDS Susceptibility on the Human Genome: TSG101”. Second place and $150 savings bond went to Sonia Abichandani of Houston (Clear Lake High School) for her project titled “Monte Carlo Traveling Salesman”. A tie for third place and $50 in savings bonds each went to the following two students: Cesar Torres of El Paso (Americas High School, project titled “Global Warming and the World of Tomorrow”) and Elizabeth Haro of San Antonio (Health Careers High School, project titled “The Anti-proliferative Effect of a Novel Glycosylated Human Growth Hormone Isoform in Human Breast Cancer Cells.”)

Alamo Regional Science and Engineering
Fair
- 2011 Fair: The San Antonio Chapter sent judges to the 2011 Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The judging was held at St. Mary’s University on March 7 to help select those Senior Division Projects (grades 9-12) that showed excellence in the use of statistical methods. Many thanks to these members who volunteered to judge: Norma Ketchum, Keying Ye, John Schoolfield, Danny Sharon, and Howard Monroe.
Howard Monroe represented the chapter at the Awards Ceremony on March 8, 2011. The following awards were presented:
- First Place and $125 to Jaime Parra from Health Careers High School for his project titled, “Association between genetic variation of the fibrinogen gene and HIV-1 susceptibility”;
- Second Place and $75 to Amy Robinson from Keystone High School, for her project titled, “Astronomical image processing: eliminating random atmosphere noise and enhancing low resolution images”; and
- Third Place and $50 to Carolina Lopez-Trevino of John Jay Science Academy for her project titled, “Synergistic neuroprotection of astrocytes against oxidative stress-related injury and degeneration”.
- 2010 Fair:
The San Antonio Chapter sent judges to the 2010 Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair at St. Mary’s University on March 9 to help select those Senior Division Projects (grades 9-12) that showed excellence in the use of statistical methods. Many thanks to these members who volunteered to judge: Ken Williams, Anjelita Cadena, Michael Lecocke, Norma Ketchum, Carolyn Oakley, and Howard Monroe.
At the Awards Ceremony on March 10, 2010 the San Antonio Chapter recognized the following students and their projects:
- First Place and a $250 savings bond to Carolyn Ye from Keystone Upper High School for her project titled, “Effects of Acidity and Salt on the Survival Rate of Group Streptococcus”;
- Second Place and $150 in savings bonds ($75 each) to the team of Brigette Lea and Derek Lam, both from Keystone Upper High School, for their project titled, “An investigation of Rain-X© and Sunscreen Coating: Protection Against Radiation-Induced Oxidation Stress”; and
- Third Place and a $100 savings bond to Neil Redfield of John Jay Science Academy for his project titled, “Algebra: Not the Same Old Game”.
- 2009 Fair:
The San Antonio Chapter sent volunteer judges to the 2009 Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair at St. Mary’s University on March 10th to help select those senior high division projects that showed excellence in the use of statistical methods. Volunteer judges this year were Howard Monroe, Ken Williams, Carolyn Oakley, Keying Ye, Yi Cao, Mike Lecocke and Norma Ketchum. The Chapter made three awards:
- First place and $250 in savings bonds was awarded to the team of Ernest Thomas and Huzeifa Badshah from Health Careers High School for their project titled "Minimizing Lawn Mower Emissions.”
- Second place and a $150 savings bond was awarded to Eric VanDyk from Churchill High School whose project was titled "Multitasking: Does Cell Phone Usage Affect Performance?”
- Third place and a $100 savings bond was awarded to Wolf Honore from Keystone High School whose project was titled "Effects of CO2 on the Nutritional Content of Brassica juncea.”
- 2008 Fair:
The San Antonio Chapter sent volunteer judges to the 2008 Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair at St. Mary’s University on March 8th to help select those senior division projects that showed excellence in the use of statistical methods. Volunteer judges this year were Howard Monroe, Ken Williams, Pete Donahoe, Carolyn Oakley, Keying Ye and Norma Ketchum. The San Antonio Chapter made the following awards:

- 2007 Fair: Judging took place on Friday, March 16, 2007 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The location was St. Mary’s University, Bill Greehey Arena, in San Antonio. Judging coordinator was Howard Monroe

- 2006 Fair: Judging was done on Saturday, March 11, 2006 from
8:30 am to 12:30 pm. A catered lunch was provided free of charge.
The location was St. Mary's University, Bill Greehey Arena, in San Antonio.
Judging coordinator was Howard Monroe (hmonroe2@satx.rr.com; 210-421-7547).
Judges were Bill Alley, Jacobina Alley, Mark Hager, Norma Ketchum, Howard Monroe,
Anuradha Roy, David Smith, and Ken Williams. The following awards were presented:
- First place and a $250 savings bond was awarded to Adam Shadfan of Keystone High School
whose project was titled "The Effects of Pterstibene and Resveratrol on
Triticum aestivum and Phaseolus vulgaris Subjected to Drought Stress."
- Second place and a $150 savings bond was awarded to Anakaren Parga
from Jay Science and Engineering Academy whose project was
titled "Correlation Between White Matter Lesions and Aging."
- Third place and a $100 savings bond was awarded to Alicia Abigail
Perez of Jay Science and Engineering Academy whose project was
titled "The Conduciveness of Various Surfaces on Fingerprints."
- Seven honorable mentions were also recognized.
- 2005 Fair:
The Chapter sent volunteers to judge entries at the 2005 Alamo
Regional Science and Engineering Fair which was held at the
Municipal Auditorium. Judging was done
on Monday, March 7, 2005. The Chapter's Judging Coordinator was
Howard Monroe (hmonroe2@satx.rr.com; 210-656-9058).
- 2004 Fair: The 2004 Alamo Regional Science and
Engineering Fair was held March 8th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Don Owen Award
Background: Each year the ASA's San Antonio Chapter presents the Don Owen
Award to a statistician who embodies the three-fold accomplishments of
Professor Owen: excellence in research, statistical consultation,
and service to the statistical community. Nominations are solicited
from all ASA chapters.
The Don Owen Award, cosponsored by Taylor & Francis, is named
for Donald B. Owen, who, before his death in 1991, was Distinguished
Professor of Statistics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas,
Texas. Professor Owen's long and extremely productive career, including
research, consultation, and service, is the ideal against which
nominees are compared.
