ASA Traveling Course "R Programming: From the Classroom to the Real World" by Jay Emerson

Event Dates:  Saturday  July 30 - Saturday  July 30
City: Milwaukee   State: Wisconsin   Country: USA
Event Type:  Short Courses
ASA Sponsored:  Yes
Abstract Provides a hands on introduction and review of the R language and teaches essentials of R programming to users at all levels. It uses real-world data problems accessible to all audiences.

The distinction between programming with R and using R is an important one. Most people can use R as a tool for focused tasks that fit neatly into different boxes. This workshop emphasizes problem solving where no single function or package is likely to be sufficient.

Outline The core language syntax and data structures for working with and exploring data. Accessing and organizing data; arithmetic and logical operators; conditional arguments; loops; subsetting; common functions; getting help and using extension packages.

Focusing on base graphics but with a quick introduction to ggplot2.

Data cleaning/munging/scraping/manipulation/tidying. Getting ready for the analysis often seems like 95% of the work: a seemingly endless iterative process of exploring, manipulating, visualizing, etc.

An introduction to parallel computing and some more advanced topics related to high-performance computing.

About the Instructor John W. Emerson (Jay) is Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor, Adjunct, in the Department of Statistics at Yale University. His work with the S language extends back to 1990 and he was one of the earliest adopters of R for introductory statistics courses (circa 2002). He frequently teaches workshops to clients in government and industry and has taught summer courses and workshops at universities around the world.

Symposium on Statistical and Computational Methods for Pharmacogenetic Epidemiology of Cancer

Event Dates:  Thursday  August 11 - Friday  August 12
City: New York   State: New York   Country: USA
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
This past decade has witnessed considerable progress in genomics technology and in the successful development of novel anti-cancer treatments. Nonetheless, curative therapy for cancer and cancer-related traits continues to be a challenging task. Recent studies have provided empirical evidence that carriers of certain germline or somatic variants are unlikely to benefit from specific treatments or preventive intervention strategies. This has ushered in a new era of pharmacogenetic investigations to identify molecular features that inform therapeutic response in humans. Statistical and computational methods play a pivotal role in the design and analysis of epidemiological and clinical studies of treatment or intervention and genetic/genomic characteristics of individuals. This two-day symposium, co-organized by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center, will bring together junior researchers, leading experts, and graduate students working on statistical and computational methodologies with applications to studies of predictive biomarkers of cancer to discuss contemporary analytic issues, to exchange ideas, to stimulate collaborations, and to promote the use of novel statistical methods in the general cancer research community. The topical sessions will include: gene-treatment interactions in statistical models; heterogeneity of cancer etiology, progression, and response to treatment; targeted screening and intervention in clinical and population-based studies; novel sampling designs for evaluating treatment effects according to biomarker status; and statistical and computational software packages.

Assimilating Long Term Data Into Ecosystem Models

Event Dates:  Saturday  August 13 - Saturday  August 20
City: Land O'Lakes   State: Wisconsin   Country: USA
Event Type:  Short Courses
ASA Sponsored:  No
This course will provide 20 graduate students and postdocs with intensive training in tools to 1) estimate the signal and uncertainty in historical and paleoecological data and 2) assimilate both signal and uncertainty into the current suite of terrestrial ecosystem models. The course has a hands-on, integrated curriculum emphasizing the data/model process from design through data collection, analysis and back to design. We will collect tree-rings and sedimentary data (e.g., pollen, charcoal, and macrofossils). Analysis of these data will take place in a Bayesian mode of inference addressing uncertainty in age-models, calibration of proxy data, and integration of diverse historical data. After an introduction to inference from ecosystem models in traditional "forward" mode, participants will integrate ecological parameters estimated from their data sets into these ecosystem models using formal Bayesian data assimilation. Participating faculty: Mike Dietze (Boston University); Steve Jackson (U.S. Geological Survey/University of Arizona); Jason McLachlan (University of Notre Dame); Chris Paciorek (University of California Berkeley); Jack Williams (University of Wisconsin). This workshop is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and is free to participants. Transportation to Chicago, Illinois or Madison, Wisconsin is not included. We are seeking students with interests and backgrounds in statistics, paleoecology, and/or terrestrial ecosystem modeling. Send a CV, a statement detailing why you want to take the course and how it will help your research, and arrange to have a letter of support from your major advisor. Applications need to be sent to Jody Peters at peters.63@nd.edu by February 15, 2016.

During the past decade, one of the most notable transformations in science has been the availability of large and diverse sets of data. This trend has been accompanied by the increased use of machine learning and statistical techniques to classify patients and optimize treatments in precision medicine. In this context several concomitant factors can cause poor reproducibility levels, including unmeasured and heterogenous covariates' distributions across studies, new technologies and ascertainment mechanisms. The focus of the workshop will be on statistical techniques and applications to understand and prevent the most important and common causes of lapses of reproducibility.

Invited speakers include Keith Baggerly (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center), Bin Yu (University of California, Berkeley), David Madigan (Columbia University), Edo Airoldi (Harvard University), Levi Waldron (City University of New York). As part of the workshop, we are hosting a student poster competition, with prizes for first, second and third place. We invite students to present their work on novel statistical methods and computational approaches. A broad range of contributions, from theoretical statistics to applications in a variety of biomedical fields will be evaluated. Students with ongoing projects in robust statistics, reproducibility and replicablity are particularly encouraged to participate.
