SAMSI Mathematical and Statistical Ecology Opening Workshop

Event Dates:  Monday  August 18 - Friday  August 22
City: Research Triangle Park   State: North Carolina   Country: USA
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
Ecological modeling has developed in two quite different ways. On the one hand, theoretical ecologists develop mathematical models that are analyzed using traditional tools of applied mathematics, such as PDEs and dynamical systems. These models are then used to establish properties such as resilience (the ability of a system to withstand perturbations) or tipping points (conditions under which a system is transformed permanently into a new state). On the other hand, statisticians and data analysts have developed increasingly sophisticated statistical tools, such as Bayesian hierarchical models applied to large spatio-temporal datasets, but often without delatiled consideration of nonlinear dynamics. Statistical tools used by ecologists are often different from those used by statisticians and there is a need for a transfer of expertise in both directions. This program will bring together three groups of researchers - statisticians, mathematicians and theoretical ecologists - to study and develop the interactions among these different approaches. Many of the important issues are multi-scale, e.g. models developed based on their fine-scale behavior are then used to study large-scale behavior of the system. This in turn raises questions about model misspecification, model selection or model averaging, and uncertainty quantification. Finally there is the possibility if using statistical and mathematical tools for management of ecosystems and the formulation of public policy.

9th International Conference on Forensic Inference and Statistics

Event Dates:  Tuesday  August 19 - Friday  August 22
City: Leiden   State: International   Country: the Netherlands (Europe)
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
This international conference - in short ICFIS2014 - unites lawyers, statisticians and forensic scientists in their interest in optimal reasoning concerning forensic evidence. Technical developments in biological, physical, chemical and digital forensic disciplines are fast and have an increasing impact on law enforcement and the justice system. Examples are DNA profiling, fingerprint and illicit drug analysis, and analysis of large digital datasets for intelligence purposes. Whatever the type of evidence, it can only be of value when it is properly gathered, analyzed, evaluated, and communicated by the scientist. Moreover, it should be understood by the legal decision maker. This requires sound statistical and logical methods, and good communication between lawyers and scientists. The conference promotes the interaction between providers and users of forensic evidence. It focuses on probabilistic methods for the evaluation of forensic evidence, and their use in law and law enforcement. The conference will provide a forum for oral presentations and posters. Furthermore, the first day of the conference will include workshops.

Themes: 1) Evaluating evidence of emerging analytical technologies 2) Epidemiological evidence and the law 3) Education of methods for evidence interpretation 4) Communication between lawyers and experts 5) Legal versus scientific reasoning 6) Quantifying evidential value 7) DNA mixture interpretation 8) Interpretation at activity level 9) Combining evidence 10) Deciding under uncertainty 11) Statistics as evidence

PQG Conference - Integrative Approaches to Understand Allelic Function

Event Dates:  Thursday  November 20 - Friday  November 21
City: Boston   State: Massachusetts   Country: USA
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
The Program in Quantitative Genomics at the Harvard School of Public Health, jointly with the HSPH Department of Biostatistics and the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, will host its 8th two-day conference on November 20-21, 2014 at the Joseph B. Martin Conference at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

The conference will be entitled "Integrative Approaches to Understand Allelic Function" and will seek to examine the use of evolutionary functional genomics, statistical genetics, and integrative approaches to understand the function of rare and common human alleles. We will discuss the interdisciplinary challenges of data analysis involved. We seek to engage scientists working in experimental, clinical, and computational epigenomics in a discussion centered on three important topics: 1. High-throughput strategies to understand non-coding allelic functions 2. Integrative approaches to interpret the function of non-coding alleles 3. Integrative approaches to interpret the function of coding alleles

The conference schedule includes time for scientific presentations, as well as a poster session for submitted abstracts.

Three abstracts will be selected for Stellar Abstract Awards and to be presented as 15-minute platform talks. Each of these speakers will receive an award of up to $500 for travel assistance or other conference expenses.

Philosophy of Information and Information Processing

Event Dates:  Friday  March 27 - Friday  March 27
City: Oxford   State: International   Country: UK
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The overall objective of this workshop is to study open questions within the philosophy of information and information processing, with an emphasis on the value of observed information and its measurement. Interest in the philosophy, meaning and value of information goes back half a century but has rapidly increased recently with many new directions of research into the meaning, quantification and measures of information and its complexity. Theoretic advances in these directions will have a huge impact on a wide range of real world applications.

In our first workshop on the topic (October, 2011) we focused on one aspect of the philosophy of information: the different techniques to measure information and to identify meaningful information. In our second workshop (April, 2013) we focused on another aspect of the philosophy of information: the value of information. Building on our earlier workshops and recent development. In this one-day workshop we will broaden the scope from the philosophy of information to the philosophy of information processing. While we welcome the continuing discussions on traditional topics on philosophy of information, we wish to encourage new studies on information-theoretic metrics that take into account of the processing of information. These new topics may include, but are not limited to:

Fundamentals of Info-metrics: measuring information, and its related properties e.g., value, uncertainty, trust, complexity, and so on.

Info-metrics for Information Processing: measuring meaningfulness, noisiness, complementary and contradicting information,inter-relationship between information, value of processing, correctness of processing, and other processing-related properties.
