Short Course on The Mathematical Sciences in Obesity Research

Event Dates:  Monday  May 12 - Friday  May 16
City: Birmingham   State: Alabama   Country: USA
Event Type:  Short Courses
ASA Sponsored:  No
We invite you to join us at our five day short course on "The Mathematical Sciences in Obesity Research" at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Mon 5/12/2014 - Fri 5/16/2014.

The mathematical sciences including engineering, statistics, computer science, physics, econometrics, psychometrics, epidemiology, and mathematics qua mathematics are increasingly being applied to advance our understanding of the causes, consequences, and alleviation of obesity. These applications do not merely involve routine well-established approaches easily implemented in widely available commercial software. Rather, they increasingly involve computationally demanding tasks, use and in some cases development of novel analytic methods and software, new derivations, computer simulations, and unprecedented interdigitation of two or more existing techniques. Such advances at the interface of the mathematical sciences and obesity research require bilateral training and exposure for investigators in both disciplines. This course on the mathematical sciences in obesity research features some of the world's finest scientists working in this domain to fill this unmet need by providing nine topic driven modules designed to bridge the disciplines.

For full details of the course, please refer to the attached application & draft agenda, and our website at http://www.soph.uab.edu/energetics/shortcourse/first. You may also apply online at http://www.soph.uab.edu/energetics/shortcourse/first/application.

Limited travel scholarships are available to young investigators.

Please apply prior to Fri 3/28/2014. Accepted applicants will be notified no later than Fri 4/04/2014. Women, members of underrepresented minority groups and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. We look forward to seeing you in Birmingham this summer!

City: Glastonbury   State: Connecticut   Country: USA
Event Type:  Short Courses
ASA Sponsored:  Yes
This short course will provide an exposition on health measurement scales - specifically, on patient-reported outcomes.

Some key elements in the development of a patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure will be noted. The core topics of validity and reliability of a PRO measure will be discussed. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, techniques to understand the underlying structure of a PRO measure, will be described. The topic of mediation modeling will be presented as a way to identify and explain the mechanism that underlies an observed relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable via the inclusion of a third variable, known as a mediator variable. Approaches to interpret PRO results will be elucidated in order to make results useful and meaningful. Other topics such as item response theory and longitudinal analysis will be considered if time permits. Illustrations will be provided mainly through real-life examples and also through simulated examples using SAS.

SAMSI Undergraduate Modeling Workshop

Event Dates:  Sunday  May 18 - Friday  May 23
City: Raleigh   State: North Carolina   Country: USA
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
This week long workshop will provide an introduction to mathematical and statistical research in data modeled using networks. Talks will be presented by statisticians and mathematicians who work with networks, but especially with social networks. Humans interact through a variety of channels, from face-to-face conversation to text messaging to Facebook. The large number of communication mediums as well as their foundational differences make modern social networks complex and exciting systems to study. For example, the understanding of social influence -- whereby a given individual's attitudinal, behavioral and/or health characteristics are altered as a result of interacting with others -- is crucial to efforts aimed at improving the well being of societies. However, social influence becomes increasingly difficult to understand as the complexity of social interactions increases.

Most of the week, students, in teams of 3 or 4, will use data from the Social Evolution experiment in the MIT Human Dynamics Lab (Maden et al. 2012) to investigate a variety of questions related to the formation and evolution of social networks using data from approximately 100 students in a college dormitory during the 2008-2009 academic year. The survey data contain information on social interaction related to physical proximity, telephone calls, text messaging, and perceived relations. Student teams will investigate how these various forms of social interaction change over time and how they are correlated with changes in individual-specific characteristics such as eating and exercise habits, political opinions during the 2008 election, flu symptom exhibition, and tobacco usage.

Event Dates:  Sunday  May 25 - Thursday  May 29
City: Lisbon   State: International   Country: Portugal
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
In the era of large astronomical surveys that are grappling with unsolved methodological and data challenges, transforming Data into Science is a huge, and exciting, problem. With surveys and instruments such as Planck, Pan-STARRS1, DES, VST KiDS, LSST, Gaia, EUCLID, JPAS, SKA, wide-field spectroscopic surveys and the large and interconnected databases of archival material coming online, a special scientific focus on cosmological inference is of great interest. Without this focus there is no guarantee that the best possible science will be the outcome of this data-flood. But transforming data into knowledge is still a largely unsolved problem; a problem, that must be tackled by cross-disciplinary efforts.

During the recent years there has been a resumption of the dialogue between astronomers and statisticians; this dialogue has been fruitful and has been at the origin of a new Astrostatistics discipline. Since 2009 this discipline has a committee under the International Statistical Institute, (roughly) the counterpart of the IAU, and later, in 2012 an IAU Working Group in Astrostatistics and Astroinformatics was created. It is thus timely to hold a first cross-disciplinary IAU Symposium devoted to Astrostatistics.

Keynote speakers will cover: cosmic microwave background, weak gravitational lensing, combining probes, statistics of fields, large-scale structure, Bayesian methods, 21cm cosmology, massive parameter estimation, overwhelmingly large datasets, errors and nonparametric estimation.

SAMSI Mathematical and Statistical Ecology Opening Workshop

Event Dates:  Monday  August 18 - Friday  August 22
City: Research Triangle Park   State: North Carolina   Country: USA
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
Ecological modeling has developed in two quite different ways. On the one hand, theoretical ecologists develop mathematical models that are analyzed using traditional tools of applied mathematics, such as PDEs and dynamical systems. These models are then used to establish properties such as resilience (the ability of a system to withstand perturbations) or tipping points (conditions under which a system is transformed permanently into a new state). On the other hand, statisticians and data analysts have developed increasingly sophisticated statistical tools, such as Bayesian hierarchical models applied to large spatio-temporal datasets, but often without delatiled consideration of nonlinear dynamics. Statistical tools used by ecologists are often different from those used by statisticians and there is a need for a transfer of expertise in both directions. This program will bring together three groups of researchers - statisticians, mathematicians and theoretical ecologists - to study and develop the interactions among these different approaches. Many of the important issues are multi-scale, e.g. models developed based on their fine-scale behavior are then used to study large-scale behavior of the system. This in turn raises questions about model misspecification, model selection or model averaging, and uncertainty quantification. Finally there is the possibility if using statistical and mathematical tools for management of ecosystems and the formulation of public policy.
