DAE 2015

Event Dates:  Wednesday  March 04 - Friday  March 06
City: Cary   State: North Carolina   Country: USA
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
The DAE Conference Series The purpose of the Design and Analysis of Experiments (DAE) conference series is to provide support and encouragement to junior researchers in the field of design and analysis of experiments, and to stimulate interest in topics of practical relevance to science and industry. The meetings also attract top notch senior researchers, primarily from North America and Europe, and emphasize interaction between junior and senior researchers.

The DAE conference series grew out of a conference that was held in 2000 at The Ohio State University. While this initial conference concentrated on the Midwest, subsequent conferences became truly international in terms of participants and expanded to North America in terms of locations. The latter have included Vancouver, BC (2002), Chicago, IL (2003), Santa Fe, NM (2005, www.stat.lanl.gov/DAE2005/index.html), Memphis, TN (2007, www.msci.memphis.edu/DAE2007/), Columbia, MO (2009, dae.stat.missouri.edu/) and Athens, GA (2012, www.stat.uga.edu/events/DAE2012/program).

DAE 2015 is the eighth event in the DAE conference series. It will focus on emerging areas of research in experimental design, as well as novel innovations in traditional areas.

The aim of this workshop is to create a forum for ideas for overcoming current and future challenges in the analysis of human microbiome data. In this workshop, participants will learn how metagenomic (sequence-based) and metabolomic (mass spectroscopy-based) data are generated and the implications for analysis. Gaps in the current state-of-the-art methods will be highlighted, particularly with respect to the analysis of multivariate longitudinal data and the use of statistical experimental design to assess bias. Participants will break into research groups and will be asked to formulate plans to address the de?ciencies of current methods.

Philosophy of Information and Information Processing

Event Dates:  Friday  March 27 - Friday  March 27
City: Oxford   State: International   Country: UK
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The overall objective of this workshop is to study open questions within the philosophy of information and information processing, with an emphasis on the value of observed information and its measurement. Interest in the philosophy, meaning and value of information goes back half a century but has rapidly increased recently with many new directions of research into the meaning, quantification and measures of information and its complexity. Theoretic advances in these directions will have a huge impact on a wide range of real world applications.

In our first workshop on the topic (October, 2011) we focused on one aspect of the philosophy of information: the different techniques to measure information and to identify meaningful information. In our second workshop (April, 2013) we focused on another aspect of the philosophy of information: the value of information. Building on our earlier workshops and recent development. In this one-day workshop we will broaden the scope from the philosophy of information to the philosophy of information processing. While we welcome the continuing discussions on traditional topics on philosophy of information, we wish to encourage new studies on information-theoretic metrics that take into account of the processing of information. These new topics may include, but are not limited to:

Fundamentals of Info-metrics: measuring information, and its related properties e.g., value, uncertainty, trust, complexity, and so on.

Info-metrics for Information Processing: measuring meaningfulness, noisiness, complementary and contradicting information,inter-relationship between information, value of processing, correctness of processing, and other processing-related properties.

Title: Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data

Description: This course provides an introduction to hierarchical modeling and related statistical methods for analyzing spatially correlated data. We will begin by outlining and providing illustrative examples of the three types of spatial data: point-level (geostatistical), areal (lattice), and spatial point patterns. We describe exploratory data analysis tools followed by traditional modeling approaches for point-referenced data. Subsequently, we introduce fully model-based approaches emphasizing upon Bayesian inference and computing. We will include hierarchical modeling for both univariate and multivariate spatial response data, a discussion of spatial point process models, and spatial modeling for large data sets (the so-called "big N problem"). Examples from environmental sciences and public health will be illustrated using R packages such as spBayes and also the OpenBUGS software

Bayesian Nonparametrics: Synergies between Statistics, Probability and Mathematics

Event Dates:  Monday  June 29 - Thursday  July 02
City: RTP   State: North Carolina   Country: USA
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
Bayesian Nonparametrics (BNP) is a rapidly evolving area at the intersection of statistics, machine learning, probability and computer science. The focus is on modeling infinite-dimensional unknown objects that may consist of curves, surfaces, processes or probability measures. There are currently several vibrant communities focused on different aspects of BNP ranging from design of new processes motivated by machine learning and high-dimensional data problems, asymptotic properties, probabilistic properties, computation and intersections of these different areas. The area is amazingly multi-disciplinary, with leading researchers having diverse backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, probability theory, computer science and electrical engineering. The goal of this four-day workshop is to bring together a group of leading researchers having different perspectives on BNP including "outsiders" working on related areas relevant to BNP, such as optimization and probability, with the goal of spurring new collaborative projects aimed at developing transformative new approaches and high impact scientific tools.

ECAS course on Statistical Analysis of Network Data

Event Dates:  Monday  September 28 - Friday  October 02
City: Herrsching   State: International   Country: Germany
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The European Courses in Advanced Statistics (ECAS) are intended to achieve postgraduate training in special areas of statistics for both researchers and teachers at universities. Professionals working in industry and interested in the application of new statistical method are also welcome. The participants are expected to have a good background in statistics at the PhD level although not necessarily oriented to the subject of the course. Young researchers especially from all European countries are encouraged to participate and to contribute to an international audience. The statistical analysis of network data is an emerging field in statistics, which is challenging both model-wise and computationally. In its most simple form a network consists of a set of N nodes (actors), which are potentially linked with each other through edges. Network data of this type are represented as NxN dimensional connectivity matrix Y with entries 0 for no edge or 1 if there is an edge between two nodes. The edges between the actors are thereby assumed to be random and the focus of interest when it comes to modelling the network. Examples include social networks, biological networks or economic networks. The ECAS course will provide an introduction to the field of statistical network data analysis. Experts in the field will present models, software and open research questions in this wide field.

Nonclinical Biostatistics Conference 2015

Event Dates:  Tuesday  October 13 - Thursday  October 15
City: Villanova   State: Pennsylvania   Country: USA
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
Nonclinical Biostatistics is a vibrant and challenging application area in pharmaceutical research. A conference entirely devoted to Nonclinical Biostatistics will take place October 13 - 15, 2015 at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The conference is jointly organized by statisticians from industry, academia, and the FDA, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics at Villanova University. The conference theme is 'Nonclinical Statistics - Building Continuity from Discovery through Manufacturing'. The conference provides a venue for the presentation and discussion of scientific and statistical issues relevant to the field. This is the fourth such conference held in the United States. Registration and a call for abstracts will open on February 15, 2015. All information, key dates, and registration materials will be posted, as they become available, on the conference website: http://www.ncb2015.net. Questions, suggestions and comments may be directed to Paul McAllister (610-787-3233 or paul.r.mcallister@gsk.com)
