John W. Tukey 100th Birthday Celebration at Princeton University

Event Dates:  Friday  September 18 - Friday  September 18
City: Princeton   State: New Jersey   Country: USA
Event Type:  Meeting
ASA Sponsored:  No
The Center for Statistics and Machine Learning will be celebrating John W. Tukey's 100th birthday with a special conference on September 18, 2015 at Princeton University. The conference will focus on Tukey's scientific legacy and his enormous impact on modern statistics and data science.

John W. Tukey was one of the most influential statisticians of the 20th century. He was the founding chair of the Department of Statistics at Princeton University. Among his many accomplishments, he pioneered the field of exploratory data analysis, made significant contributions to jackknife estimation, and he invented the Fast Fourier Transform, the box plot, and the computer science terms "bit" and "software."

Although formally trained in mathematics, Tukey's research evolved to focus on practical, common sense approaches in statistics without a heavy reliance on theoretical mathematics. He spent much time working on applied problems with collaborators in academia and industry. Many successful statisticians were trained directly by Tukey or are one of his academic descendants. All of the individuals speaking at this conference either worked directly with Tukey or are in his direct academic lineage.

Confirmed Speakers: Keynote - David Donoho (Stanford University) Yoav Benjamini (Tel Aviv University) Persi Diaconis (Stanford University) Jianqing Fan (Princeton University) Luisa Fernholz (Temple University) Jerome Friedman (Stanford University) Rafael Irizarry (Harvard University) Karen Kafadar (University of Virginia) Stephan Morgenthaler (École Polytechnique Fedérale de Lausanne) Scott Zeger (Johns Hopkins University)

ECAS course on Statistical Analysis of Network Data

Event Dates:  Monday  September 28 - Friday  October 02
City: Herrsching   State: International   Country: Germany
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The European Courses in Advanced Statistics (ECAS) are intended to achieve postgraduate training in special areas of statistics for both researchers and teachers at universities. Professionals working in industry and interested in the application of new statistical method are also welcome. The participants are expected to have a good background in statistics at the PhD level although not necessarily oriented to the subject of the course. Young researchers especially from all European countries are encouraged to participate and to contribute to an international audience. The statistical analysis of network data is an emerging field in statistics, which is challenging both model-wise and computationally. In its most simple form a network consists of a set of N nodes (actors), which are potentially linked with each other through edges. Network data of this type are represented as NxN dimensional connectivity matrix Y with entries 0 for no edge or 1 if there is an edge between two nodes. The edges between the actors are thereby assumed to be random and the focus of interest when it comes to modelling the network. Examples include social networks, biological networks or economic networks. The ECAS course will provide an introduction to the field of statistical network data analysis. Experts in the field will present models, software and open research questions in this wide field.

4th International Conference and Exhibition on Nutrition

Nutrition is the science that deals with the interaction of the nutrients with other substances in food (polyphenols, carotenoids, phytochemical, antioxidants etc.) in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of the organism. The types of nutrients that are essential for healthy wellbeing of individuals are Carbohydrates, Protein, Vitamins and Minerals. People often confuse between natural and synthetic vitamins. One of the major differences between natural and synthetic vitamins is that natural vitamins are natural and contains cofactors whereas synthetic vitamins are manufactured in the Laboratory and does not contain cofactors. In order to stay healthy it is necessary to follow Dietary guidelines and have foods rich in balanced diet. The branches of science that are useful in maintaining and improving good health are Dietetics and Food Biotechnology.

European Seminar on Bayesian Econometrics 2015

Event Dates:  Thursday  October 29 - Friday  October 30
City: Gerzenses   State: International   Country: Switzerland
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The increased availability of large disaggregated datasets opens up the possibility to analyse economic and financial issues from a different perspective. The build-up of financial imbalances and excessive risk-taking before the financial crisis, and the effects of the crash, call for the analysis of the interaction between the financial and the real sector and the linkages between interconnected banks; the insights gained from such analyses hold promise to improve regulation. In the area of economic development, field data and their network structure yield valuable insights into individual decision making with direct implications for policy. On the methodological side, recent advances in estimation methods and hardware implementation substantially reduce the restrictions imposed by the curse of dimensionality and complexity. This year's European Seminar on Bayesian Econometrics, www.esobe.org, focusses on these issues. The annual conference is hosted by the Study Center Gerzensee, Foundation of the Swiss National Bank. The scientific program includes keynote addresses by John Geweke (University of Technology, Sydney), Matthew O. Jackson (Stanford University), Frank Schorfheide (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia)

Global Summit and Expo on Healthcare

Event Dates:  Monday  November 09 - Wednesday  November 11
City: Dubai   State: International   Country: United Arab Emirates
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
1. Healthcare: Expansion, Challenges and Opportunities There are many Healthcare challenges facing all stakeholders across the health industries spectrum. Forecasting the future of healthcare and health policy is an imperfect science. Among the predictions made in the mid-1980s were that there would be a physician surplus, a growing number of elderly people, an increase in the number of people in managed care plans, restructured health benefits, new technologies, more for-profit healthcare delivery, rising healthcare costs, and a restrained federal government role. All of these issues-with the exception of a physician surplus, which is still being debated-turned out to have an impact on health policy. Healthcare is a major growth area in the Middle East, with public and private investment in the sector forecast to exceed $150bn in 2016. In the GCC in particular, governments are allocating ever-increasing budget shares to healthcare, to meet soaring demand fuelled by high population growth rates, longer life expectancy and the extension of compulsory health insurance, as well as the spread of lifestyle diseases and chronic illness.

Use of tobacco products and heavy drinking can affect the risk of developing hypo pharyngeal cancer. Signs and symptoms of hypo pharyngeal cancer include a sore throat and ear pain. Hematopoietic stem cells are unique cells that are primarily located in the bone marrow. These stem cells mature into a number of blood cell types found in your body. Hematopoietic stem cell treatment is the transplantation of multi potent hematopoietic stem cells, usually derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood. It may be auto logous (the patient's own stem cells are used) or allogeneic . It is a medical procedure in the field of hematology. The epidemiology, etiology, pathology, and management of thyroid and parathyroid carcinoma are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the clinical differences in the management and treatment of the various histologic subtypes of thyroid cancer.
