High-throughput strategies to understand non-coding allelic functions 2. Integrative approaches to interpret the function of non-coding alleles 3. Integrative approaches to interpret the function of coding alleles

The conference schedule includes time for scientific presentations, as well as a poster session for submitted abstracts.

Three abstracts will be selected for Stellar Abstract Awards and to be presented as 15-minute platform talks. Each of these speakers will receive an award of up to $500 for travel assistance or other conference expenses.

Philosophy of Information and Information Processing

Event Dates:  Friday  March 27 - Friday  March 27
City: Oxford   State: International   Country: UK
Event Type:  Workshops & Seminars
ASA Sponsored:  No
The overall objective of this workshop is to study open questions within the philosophy of information and information processing, with an emphasis on the value of observed information and its measurement. Interest in the philosophy, meaning and value of information goes back half a century but has rapidly increased recently with many new directions of research into the meaning, quantification and measures of information and its complexity. Theoretic advances in these directions will have a huge impact on a wide range of real world applications.

In our first workshop on the topic (October, 2011) we focused on one aspect of the philosophy of information: the different techniques to measure information and to identify meaningful information. In our second workshop (April, 2013) we focused on another aspect of the philosophy of information: the value of information. Building on our earlier workshops and recent development. In this one-day workshop we will broaden the scope from the philosophy of information to the philosophy of information processing. While we welcome the continuing discussions on traditional topics on philosophy of information, we wish to encourage new studies on information-theoretic metrics that take into account of the processing of information. These new topics may include, but are not limited to:

Fundamentals of Info-metrics: measuring information, and its related properties e.g., value, uncertainty, trust, complexity, and so on.

Info-metrics for Information Processing: measuring meaningfulness, noisiness, complementary and contradicting information,inter-relationship between information, value of processing, correctness of processing, and other processing-related properties.

The focus of the conference is on rank-based robust statistical methods. The Nonparametrics Section of the American Statistical Association is a co-sponsor of the conference. Over the past 40 years, rank-based nonparametric procedures have been developed. The keynote and invited conference speakers include many of the experts who are performing fundamental research in these areas. The Keynote Speakers are: Thomas Hettmansperger (Penn State University), Reginia Liu (Rutgers University), Hannu Oja (University of Turku), Simon Sheather (Texas A&M), and Douglas Wolfe (Ohio State) University. Besides the keynote addresses three invited sessions on rank-based robust methods are planned. In addition there are invited sessions on biostatistics and big data. Invited Speakers include: Ash Abebe (University of Auburn), Arnie Bathke (University of Salzburg), Kim Crimin (Novartis), Suzanne Dubnicka (Kansas State University), Casey Jelsma (NIH), John Kapenga (Western Michigan University), John Kloke (University of Wisconsin), Kjell Johnson (Arbor Analytics), Omer Ozturk (Ohio State University), Mushfiqur Rashid (FDA), and Jeffrey Terpstra (Western Michigan University), A celebration of Joe McKean's 70th birthday is a small part of the conference. The conference includes contributed (poster) sessions. Students are encouraged to come and present. The organizers are seeking funds to offset students' costs. A banquet is planned for Thursday evening, April 9th. Information is updated at http://www.stat.wmich.edu/mckean/RBconf/.
