Application of the ASA Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice as a Statistical Consultant (302819)*Nicole C. Close, EmpiriStat, Inc.
Keywords: Statistical Consultant, ethics, scenario
The Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice are a good reminder of our stewardship as statisticians. As a statistical consultant, these guidelines should be revisited throughout our practice.Through a series of decision pathway “What Would You Do” questions, this presentation will illustrate real-life ethical scenarios encountered and how the guidelines can direct us in the correct direction, but the ultimate decision resides with the consultant. We must weigh our obligations and commitments to 8 general topics of the guidelines, and determine how our professional and personal ethics may be applied in each situation. The tiered questions will be framed in the context of potential consulting at the same time with two different pharmaceutical companies with two different drugs in the same class of action submitted to the FDA, knowledge you learn based on one client, and how to use or not use this information for a different client.Consultants will be presented with the scenario, and have to choose one of several paths to lead to the next question based on their decision. Succinct discussion, consideration and recommendations will be given for each decision point in the pathway.
