O' Privacy, Where Art Thou? Mapping the Landscape of Data Confidentiality, 8:30 am, Room 102B Data privacy is a fundamental problem of the modern information infrastructure. Increasing volumes of personal and sensitive data are collected and archived by health networks, government agencies, search engines, social networking websites, and other entities. The main goal of this session is to introduce an emerging approach to tackling data privacy questions that integrates two rich traditions in data privacy research; one originating from statistics (i.e., statistical disclosure limitation) the other from computer science (i.e., privacy-preserving data mining and private data analysis). Jim Cochran is one of the founders and co-chair – along with Gary Shapiro[shapirg1@westat.com] – of Statistics Without Borders. The other founders are Fritz Scheuren and Steve Pierson. SWB, an ASA-affiliated group, currently consists of about 40 volunteers works with nonprofit organizations within and outside of the US. They are having their first general meeting here at JSM on Sunday. Current projects include working with Engineers without Borders and Care.

Joseph L. Gastwirth [jlgast@gwu.edu, 202. 994-6548]
Joe Gastwirth, a professor in the Dept. of Statistics and George Washington University, is being celebrated August first for his 45 years of statistical activity. A special conference recognizes his outstanding contributions to the development of nonparametric and robust methods and their use in genetic epidemiology, his pioneering research in statistical methods and measurement for the analysis of data arising in the areas of economic inequality, health disparities and equal employment, and in other legal applications as well as his most successful supervision of Ph D students, collaborations with other young researchers and outstanding professional service. Prof. Gastwirth has published two books in legal statistics and over 160 peer-reviewed statistical papers. He recently had a paper published on the Ricci v. DeStefano case that figured in the Sotomayor confirmation hearing.

Currently a professor of math and statistics at American University, Mary Gray was one of the primary founders of the Association for Women in Mathematics and its first president from 1971 to 1973. Professor Gray has been chair of the Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA, International Treasurer of Amnesty International, and chair of its international Development Committee. President Bush awarded her the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Mentoring. Read more at the links below:

Steve Ziliak’s session at JSM is titled the same as his book [with Deirdre N. McCloskey]: The Cult of Statistical Significance: How the Standard Error Cost Us Jobs, Justice, and Lives. The book, published in 2008, has been reviewed by Science, Nature Medicine, BBC Radio, Financial Times, the Economist, Cato Journal, and many others. Ziliak will be available for interviews between August 1, Saturday morning, and August 3, Monday afternoon.
