ASA San Antonio Chapter 2012 Don Owen Award Winner: George P. McCabe

George P. McCabe Wins 2012 Don Owen Award
On March 2nd, 2012, the San Antonio Chapter vice president Jonathan Gelfond presented the Don Owen Award to Professor George McCabe, for his outstanding contributions to statistical research, applications, and teaching. The 2012 Don Owen Award given by the American Statistical Association San Antonio chapter was presented to Dr. George P. McCabe on March 2, 2012 at the Conference of Texas Statisticians by chapter vice president, Jonathan Gelfond. The conference was held at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas and was organized by Dr. Kumer Pial Das of the Department of Mathematics. Dr. McCabe was nominated by Professor Rebecca W. Doerge of the Department of Statistics, Purdue University.

Dr. George McCabe is a Professor of Statistics and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Statistics, Purdue University. He received his doctoral degree in Mathematical Statistics from Columbia University in 1970. He served as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor, as well as the director of the Consulting Center at the Department of Statistics, Purdue University.

Dr. McCabe has published over 175 articles on statistical methodology, and in a variety of application fields including engineering, medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy. Dr. McCabe has taught numerous graduate and undergraduate courses, and he has directed a number of doctoral students. His book with Dr. David Moore (later editions with Dr. Bruce Craig), Introduction to the Practice of Statistics (now in 7th edition), "has been a major influence in changing statistical education and how it is perceived …," as stated by Dr. Doerge in her nomination letter.

Dr. McCabe has done an enormous amount of statistical consulting work not only in the university setting, but also involving over 70 government agencies, organizations, and companies.

Dr. McCabe is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a senior member of the American Society for Quality and currently is the president of the National Statistics Honorary Society, Mu Sigma Rho. He served as associate editor for Technometrics and Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, and has served as board or advisory member of many other associations and committees.

The San Antonio Chapter is proud to honor Dr. McCabe for his excellence in research, statistical consultation, and service to the statistical community. The Don Owen Award is presented annually by the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association, and Taylor and Francis, a leading international academic publisher.
