Research Fellowship Programs

ASA/NSF Federal Statistics Research Program

The ASA/NSF/Federal Statistics Fellowship program is jointly supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Bureau of the Census (Census), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).. The general objective of the program is to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research efforts that will continue to stimulate the development and advancement of methodology and social science research relevant to issues on which Federal statistical agencies seek to provide information. The program accomplishes this purpose by bringing academic researchers to work with statisticians and social scientists in the three Federal agencies for up to one year.

Candidates for Fellows submit proposals for their researcher in a competitive application process. Review Boards composed of prominent scientists appointed by ASA, in consultation with Census and BLS, review the proposals and selects the Fellows. ASA manages the publicity and outreach of the program to the academic community and the solicitation of Fellowship proposals, convenes the Review Boards and administers the Fellowship Program, obtaining from each agency periodic progress reports on its Fellows.

ASA/NSF/Census Research Program

The ASA/NSF/Census Bureau Research Program will help to bridge the gap between government and academic science. This approach brings researchers closer to the production of data sets relevant to their research. The program allows for senior statisticians, social scientists, computer scientists, geographers, and others to come to the Census Bureau as Research Fellows for a period of 6 to 12 months to use Census Bureau data sets and interact with Census Bureau staff.

Applicants for fellowships should have recognized research records and considerable expertise in their areas of proposed research. The proposed projects may be related to Census Bureau methodology or data. Research proposal deadline is December 10th. Research topics of interest may be found in the brochure. Click here for a copy of the brochure.

ASA/NSF/BLS Research Program

The ASA/NSF/BLS Fellowship Program is designed to improve the collaboration between government and academic research. The program allows Research Fellows to come to the Bureau of Labor Statistics to use agency data and interact with agency staff.

Applicants for fellowships should have academically recognized research records and considerable expertise in their areas of proposed research. The proposed projects may be in any area related to survey methods, from concept development to information dissemination. Research proposal deadline is December 10th. Research topics of interest may be found in the brochure. Click here for a copy of the brochure.

ASA & NCHS Research Fellowship Program

The American Statistical Association (ASA) in cooperation with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), created the ASA & NCHS Research Fellowship Program to bridge the gap between academic scholars and government health research programs. Fellows work to solve methodological problems and study analytic issues relevant to NCHS programs, data and facilities. Applicants should have a recognized research record and considerable expertise in the area of proposed research. For fullest consideration, fellowship applications are due by May 15; however applications will be accepted throughout the year until the positions are filled. ASA/USDA/NASS Research Fellow and Associate Program

The ASA in cooperation with the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the US Department of Agriculture conducts a Research Fellow and Associate Program. The purpose of this program is to supplement research in statistics with experience at the NASS.

The program is designed to provide the selected Fellows and Associates with research opportunities or experience in the application of statistical theory in all phases of large scale agricultural survey operations, including design, collection, quality control, forecasting, estimation, and analysis. Participants in the program will engage in research which is of mutual interest to the participant and NASS. Fellows and Associates conduct research in residence at NASS, gaining unique opportunities for use of extensive NASS data and interaction with NASS staff.

Applicants for the fellowship should have a Ph.D. and have established recognized research record and considerable expertise in their area of proposed research. Applicants for Associates are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in an appropriate field or to have made significant progress toward the degree (at least two years of graduate study). Selection of participants in the program is made by a panel of individuals from the ASA and NASS. The program year normally begins in January or September, but it is possible for an applicant to begin at another date. Applications for positions for the year beginning September should be received by March 1. For a starting date of January, the applications should arrive at the ASA office approximately six months in advance. For additional information please go to www.nass.usda.gov/research/ASA-NASS.html. ASA/BJS Research Program

The American Statistical Association Committee on Law and Justice Statistics in cooperation with the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) conducts a small grant program for the analyses of BJS and other justice-related data. This program is designed to encourage the creative and appropriate use of these data to inform substantive and methodological issues. Dissertation research may qualify for these funds. Young investigators are encouraged to apply. Research should be completed within a two-year period. Awards are typically in the range of $25,000 to $30,000, although exceptional projects as high as $40,000 will be considered. Award preference is given to research using BJS data. Additional information about priority research topics, proposal evaluation criteria, and the submission process can be found at: http://www.amstat.org/research_grants/index.cfm?fuseaction=BJS.
