GREETINGS
from the Section Chair,
LISA SULLIVAN, Chair of
Biostatistics, Boston University
Welcome to the ASA Section on Statistics
in Epidemiology (SIE) website. As the 2007 Section Chair, I
am excited to share the SIE-sponsored activities for the
upcoming year. Our website is maintained by our publications
officer, Patrick Tarwater. We hope you find it informative
and useful. Please explore our website and if you have any
comments or would like to post an announcement, please do not
hesitate to contact us (See Announcements from Members link).
Special thanks to Sander Greenland, our
past Chair for his leadership and dedication to the Section.
News: Jennifer Clark Nelson, our
2007 program chair, is organizing an exciting session for the
Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) to be held from July 29 -
August 2, 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The SIE will is
sponsoring four invited sessions entitled “Gerontologic
Biostatistics”, “Methods to Identify and Adjust for Selection
Bias in Observational Studies”, “Modeling Time-Varying
Exposures in Epidemiology”, and “Application of Hierarchical
Models to Study Genetic and Epidemiologic Risk Factors.”
We are sponsoring a short course entitled
“Statistical Evaluation of Medical Tests and Biomarkers for
Classification” which will be given by Margaret Pepe et al.
The SIE is will also sponsor several
coffee and lunchtime roundtable discussions and topic
contributed sessions (details to follow).
Student and Young Investigator Awards:
The SIE is again sponsoring a student travel award paper
competition for JSM 2007. The competition is open to students
who graduated from May 2002 through 2007 who are submitting an
abstract to JSM 2007. If you are a student we strongly
encourage you to submit a paper this year as we have funds to
provide support for several deserving papers.
The section also sponsors a Young
Investigator Award each year. The 2006 award went to Holly
Janes, Department of Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins
University. Students who graduated in May 2002 or later you
are eligible for this award. The winner will receive $750 and
a certificate which will be presented along with the paper at
a session in the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings sponsored by
the SIE.
To be considered for SIE awards you must first submit the
abstract to JSM by February 1, 2007, and then submit the paper
(pdf) to Jennifer Clark Nelson at
jenelson@u.washington.edu by May 1, with a cover letter
requesting consideration for the award.
Please see the announcement on our
website for more details.
Other Events. Our section also
participates in other activities promoting collaboration among
statisticians and epidemiologists. SIE is co-sponsoring the
second annual workshop on advanced epidemiological methods in
reproductive and perinatal epidemiology along with the Society
for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research (SPER).
There are many ways to be involved in our
section, and in ASA. If you are not yet a member of our
section we invite you to become one! Being active in an ASA
section, whether SIE or another section, is a great way to
connect with your colleagues and serve your profession.
I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake
City in August!
