STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES PRESENTING AT THE 2007 JOINT
STATISTICAL MEETINGS
A CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE SECTION ON
STATISTICS IN EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDENT / YOUNG INVESTIGATOR
COMPETITION.
Are you graduating this year or did you graduate May 2002 or
later, and are you submitting an abstract to the Joint
Statistical Meetings (JSM) 2007?
The Section on Statistics in Epidemiology
(SIE) encourages students and recent graduates who plan to
present at the 2007 JSM to submit their talks as papers to be
considered for the SIE Young Investigator Award,
to be given during the SIE Social Mixer at the 2007 Joint
Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Salt Lake City, Utah This award
of $750 and a certificate will go to the best paper presented
by a “Young Investigator” at a session in the 2007 Joint
Statistical Meetings sponsored by the SIE. At the discretion
of the award committee, additional runner-up prizes may also
be awarded with emphasis on recognizing outstanding work by
current students of statistics or biostatistics.
Criteria for assessment of papers
include:
o overall quality of the work and statistical value
o innovation and creativity
o potential substantive impact of the method
o relevance to the discipline of epidemiology.
Applicants must be:
o members of the ASA
o graduate students in Statistics,
Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or allied sciences, or recent
graduates (May 2002 or later) from a masters or doctoral
program in these departments
Other requirements:
o Jointly authored papers are acceptable, but the
applicant must be the lead author and must present the work at
the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings.
o To receive the award, the
designated awardees must attend the SIE reception and Awards
ceremony at the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants should:
A. First submit an abstract online by
February 1, 2007 to the Section on Statistics in
Epidemiology for the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings,
following JSM instructions which are given in this issue of
the AMSTAT News.
B. The completed paper for the talk
along with a cover letter requesting consideration for the SIE
Young Investigator Award is then due by May 1,
2007. These must be sent electronically as PDF files to
