INVITATION
...and invited paper sessions in 2002 in New York. Help us plan!
To members of: Social Statistics Section and Government Statistics Section; Now is the time for proposals for Invited Sessions at the 2002 Joint Statistical Meetings in New York. Under the new schedule for organizing the JSM meetings, these Invited Session proposals should be presented prior to the planning meeting in August 2001. Because Invited Session ideas are longer in evolution, we invite members of the "sister sections" to begin making proposals. Invited Sessions are designed for extensive development on a single theme or topic, with the advantage of greater time allocations per speaker than in a contributed session. Each section is allowed a limited number of invited sessions, which is rarely changed from meeting to meeting. Sections also enter the "best" ideas in a competition for additional slots not yet allocated to a specific section or committees.
A typical Invited Session includes three 30 minute invited talks, a 10 minute talk by a discussant, and 10 minutes of floor discussion (110 minutes total). Another Invited Session option is a panel discussion by five panelists on a specified topic. Other formats may also be possible, and some appear in JSM programs from past years
( http://www.amstat.org/meetings/index.html ).
We will be glad to help you develop your ideas. Nevertheless, we recognize the most refined Invited Session proposals will have an advantage in competing for a limited number of slots. The program for these sessions must be COMPLETE and FIRM by August! We look forward to your input and to putting together next year's exciting program. We welcome your invited session ideas. Please forward to your 2002 Program Chairs:

The Roger Herriot Award
On June 4, 2001, the Washington Statistical Society presented the 2001 Roger Herriot award for Innovation in Federal Statistics to Jeanne Griffith. Jeanne is currently an international education consultant and former Acting Commissioner for the National Center for Education Statistics. Jeanne is the eighth recipient with a long and distinguished career in the federal government. During her twenty-eight years in government, Jeanne has specialized in the coordination of statistics and policy in several agencies of both the Executive and Legislative branches. Her innovative work in improving the collection and dissemination of education statistics, has encompassed management, executive liaison and representation, research and reporting, and statistical policy. She has had an impact in the fields of education statistics, social demography, aging and retirement, labor force statistics, and income and poverty. Jeanne's contributions reflect key elements of Roger Herriot's career: most prominently finding innovative ways to improve the quality and integrity of Federal and international statistics.
Three speakers discussed Jeanne's various contributions to Federal statistics. They included: Katherine Wallman, Office of Management and Budget, Emerson Elliott, former Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, and Norm Bradburn, National Science Foundation.
The Roger Herriot award is sponsored by the Washington Statistical Society, the ASA's Social Statistics Section and the ASA's Government Statistics Section. Roger Herriot was the Associate Commissioner for Statistical Standards and Methodology at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) before he died in 1994. Throughout his career at NCES and the Census Bureau, Roger developed unique approaches to the solution of statistical problems in federal data collection programs. Jeanne Griffith truly exemplifies this tradition.
Wray Smith Scholarship Fund now available for donations
The Government Statistics Section is please to announce a new scholarship fund in memory of Wray Jackson Smith, a founding member of the Section, for his contributions to the Section and to the practice of statistics within the Federal government. The scholarship fund that will bear his name is intended to reward promising young statisticians for their diligence and thereby encourage them to consider a future in government statistics.
Individual contributions to the Wray Smith Scholarship Fund are welcome. Checks should be made payable to "American Statistical Association." Please include your name, address, and phone number on your check and write "Wray Smith Scholarship Fund" in the comment line on your check. Contributions should be mailed to:
