Roundtables!
Planning for next year's Joint Statistical Meetings in Salt Lake City (Jul. 29-Aug. 2) is in full swing, and now is the time for you to be considering topic contributed and contributed papers, posters, and roundtables for the SPES program. The following message describes each of these opportunities in detail. Think about them and feel free to discuss them with the section program chairs:
Then be ready to submit abstracts in a couple of months. Abstracts should be submitted on-line at www.amstat.org any time between December 1, 2006, and February 1, 2007. Mail-in abstracts must be post marked by January 22, 2007. All abstracts on-line or mail-in must be accompanied by paid registration. May 10, 2007 is the deadline for draft manuscripts for all Contributed sessions and Topic Contributed sessions to be received by session chairs and by the discussants if any.
- Topic Contributed and Contributed Sessions - SPES is sponsoring several Topic Contributed sessions. Currently there are three sessions:
"Statistics in Information Technology", "Dimension Reduction that Informs Science", and "Statistical Issues in Material Testing for Aerospace Applications?". A Topic Contributed session differs from a Regular Contributed session because each paper will have a little bit more time and the papers are organized in a coherent theme by a session organizer. If you would like to organize such a session or to contribute in one of these existing sessions, please contact Winson as soon as possible. All contributed paper presentations within SPES program will automatically be considered for "best paper" competition.
- Posters - Tired of presenting papers? Here is your chance to do something different. In JSM 2007, posters will be arranged in a new and improved format. Each poster is displayed for an entire event day at a central location, and the presenter is allotted a 2-hours time block to host his/her work. This is part of a concerted effort in all sections of ASA to raise the importance and visibility of posters in
JSM.
- Invited Posters - Towards this end, SPES is sponsoring an invited poster cluster on "Atypical Experiments in Industry," and giving out a "best poster" award at JSM2007. An atypical experiment is one that deviates from popular textbook experiments. It is common that typical experiments are altered to fit the complexity and constraints of industrial problems. We are planning to group these posters based on four application areas: chemical industry, food and consumables industry, aerospace industry, and software industry. If you wish to present a poster or know of someone who would be interested to present a poster on atypical experiments in these 4 industries, please send email to
Winson Taam by Nov 15. If you have other suggestions for the SPES invited poster cluster, please let me know. We are willing to accommodate other posters with a similar theme. If you wish to contribute a poster to JSM outside this invited cluster theme, please send the title of your poster to Winson as you submit it to ASA.
Any SPES poster will be considered in the "best poster" competition.
- Roundtable Topics - The luncheon and coffee roundtables at JSM are your opportunity to have really in-depth discussions on specialized topics---and to get fed while doing it! We are currently collecting suggestions for roundtable topics for JSM2007 in Salt Lake City. Any discussion that a moderator will lead and six to eight other SPES members will want to discuss is fair game. Last year we had roundtables on everything from cars to wavelets. What would you like to talk to your SPES peers about, while munching lunch or sipping coffee? Send your ideas for roundtable topics and moderators to
Randy Tobias.
- JSM2008 Program Planning - Last but not least, although JSM2006 wasn't long ago and JSM2007 is almost a year off, Randy Tobias is already planning for JSM2008 in Denver. All of the components above---invited, topic contributed, posters, etc.---are being assembled. Your ideas are most welcome. What would you be interested in hearing about? What do you think is an active emerging area of research for statistics in the physical and engineering sciences? Who would you like to hear from in these areas? Please send your ideas for session topics and speakers to
Randy Tobias.
Where did you eat lunch in Salt Lake City? If you attended one of the the SPES-sponsored luncheon roundtables, then you had a delicious discussion with your fellow SPES-lings. SPES sponsored five roundtables at JSM2007, and all of them saw spirited and informative interactions, with novices and experts alike contributing. Here's what some roundtablers said:
Bill Notz (moderator): The discussion went quite well with
everyone contributing. Once everyone was seated and we
made introductions, the session moved along nicely. The
time passed quickly.
Elizabeth Martínez Gómez (participant): The discussion was
very useful and informative. In fact, I was glad to meet
a colleague, a physicist. It's quite hard to find a
person with my same background in such kind of meeting.
I could express my concerns to them and they showed
interest in my questions. Personally I had a great
experience ...
Greg Piepel (moderator): The attendees were very interested
in sharing their experiences, asking questions, and
getting ideas from other attendees .... in summary my
luncheon was very successful.
Jeff Luner, the SPES program vice-chair for JSM2008 in Denver, is going to be looking for roundtable topics and moderators. Did your experience this year or the testimonials above whet your appetite? Please consider contacting Jeff with ideas you've got for next year's JSM!
