Aug. 11, 1998 - SPES Executive Committee
Meeting
Janet Buckingham
Tuesday, August 11, 1998
8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Dallas, Texas
Attendees: John Cornell, Janet Buckingham, John Spurrier, Scott Beattie
(for Dennis Lin), Darryl Downing, Rob Easterling, Fred Hulting, Randy Tobias, Mark Vangel,
Greg Piepel, Kirk Remund, Lynn Hare, Connie Borror, Ron Fricker
- Minutes from 1997 Executive Committee meeting, JSM: approved
unanimously.
- Financial report: John Cornell delivered an informal report on SPES
finances in the absence of Secretary-Treasurer Perry Haaland. (Is there a requirement for
a more formal written report???) SPES treasury balance is stable at approximately $23,000.
Separate account for Spring Research Conference has a balance of approximately $5,000.
Separate account for the SPES/Q&P newsletter has a small balance.
- Council of Sections report (Spurrier/Meyer):
- ASA office continues to encourage sections to co-sponsor Continuing Education offerings
at the JSM. Requests from sections to relax some of the deadlines to submit proposals can
not be accommodated.
- ASA Pres D. Moore challenged sections to find additional ways to serve members. He
reported that ASA members who belong to sections are much more likely to maintain their
ASA memberships. Currently 50% of ASA members belong to one or more sections. Moore also
encouraged sections to challenge the ASA office to provide needed services.
- ASA is developing a (new) strategic plan and has identified eight high-priority action
items for sections to act on. John Spurrier will send these to the Executive Committee by
e-mail for response. ASA is looking for input and for section actions with respect to
these action items. The two highest in priority were: 1. Develop a coherent plan for
outreach to nonstatisticians and future statisticians.; 2. Explore the viability of
diverse areas of publications to meet the needs of members. ASA has allocated $100,000 in
seed money to fund new initiatives in support of all strategic plan action items.
- In September 1998 ASA members will receive a ballot for the revised ASA Constitution.
See the ASA web site for more details (http://www.amstat.org).
- A proposed change is in the works for the COS charter, requiring at least two candidates
for all elected section positions.
- The ASA directory will be updated based on information gathered in the September mailing
referenced above.
- ASA approved a new policy on scheduling of the JSM. Henceforth, ¾ of the time the JSM
will be located in the northern half of North America, ¼ of the time in the south. ASA
will also institute a 7-year lead time in scheduling the JSM instead of the current 5
years.
- Each section must file a preliminary budget with the ASA office by May 15, and a final
budget by September 30. Failure to do so will result in penalties. No spending will be
allowed until a budget is filed.
- ASA has upgraded its computing facilities. ASA would like input from sections on the
types of information they would like to see, specifically with respect to membership.
(Membership trends, new members, old members, which members are fellows, etc.)
- Some sections have requested that email mailing lists of their members be assembled and
maintained by the ASA office. COS would like input from all the sections on this issue.
After some discussion, the following SPES position was reached: SPES would like to make
use of an e-mail mailing list of its members. SPES would like the ASA office to maintain
the list and send messages that SPES composes. There should be an ASA policy in which each
section designates one officer to coordinate the sending of messages through the ASA
office. (For SPES this would be the Publicity Chair.) SPES recognizes there will be some
expense on the part of ASA to do this. SPES also recommends that an initial message be
sent to members asking if they would like to receive these section-specific messages or be
removed from the list.
- COS asked sections if they would offer section membership free to new ASA members. This
was approved by unanimous proclamation. ASA office reports that one of the best devices to
attract new members is the ASA web site, and encouraged sections to keep their sites
current.
- ASA K-12 Poster and Project Competitions are requesting funding from ASA sections. Last
year eight sections (but not SPES) contributed between $250 and $1,500 each. Linda Quinn
is the contact.
- COS is creating a Section of the Year award to be based on section
compliance with documentation requirements (budget and annual report) as well as section
accomplishments.
- Funding requests (Cornell): The Gordon Research Conference on
Statistics in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering requested $1000 to fund travel grants for
either two students or one international traveler. After some discussion it was proposed
that SPES consider travel grants for students presenting papers at the Spring Research
Conference, the Gordon Conference, or the Fall Technical Conference. The Undergraduate
Data Analysis Contest also requested $1000. As an action item, John Cornell will organize
all funding requests and ask for input by e-mail. No decisions were made on any requests.
- Industrial Speakers (Hare; attachment): Mrs. Donald Marquardt
bequeathed $25,000 to the Industrial Speakers Program, now called the SPES Marquardt
Memorial Industrial Speakers Program. Only the interest from this money can be spent on
the program. Only one visit has been requested/scheduled in 1998.
- Awards (Vangel): Best contributed paper awards will be given at the
mixer. Vangel reported that the procedure for selecting the award winners may need to be
adjusted to correct for sparsely attended sessions. He will submit a proposal.
- Education (Cornell for Sartori): Meeker & Escobar course on
Reliability had 29 attendees, and at least 10 more were turned away because of a space
mix-up. The Montgomery and Vining course on GLM had 44 people enrolled. The general
feeling was to invite Meeker/Escobar to repeat their course next year, and perhaps the
Montgomery/Vining course also.
- Chemometrics (Remund): Pharmacia and Upjohn will continue to underwrite
this award through 2000 for $2000/year. Doug Hawkins, Stan Young and _____ won the 1998
award.
- Nominations (Cornell): Candidates needed for Chair, Program Chair,
Secretary Treasurer and COS representative.
- Fellows Nomination (Piepel): Send ideas for SPES members deserving of
fellow consideration to Greg Piepel.
- Operating Manual (Cornell for Morgan): 15 of 22 job descriptions are on
the SPES web site. Greg Piepel will work with Walt Morgan to add additional items to the
manual, such as a calendar.
- Spring Research Conference (Easterling; attachment):
1998 conference
held June 3-5 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hosted by the Albuquerque ASA Chapter, 120 people
attended. More than the usual number of contributed papers were submitted. An afternoon
workshop on data mining given by John Elder had 40-50 attendees. Bovas Abraham was the
program chair and Joanne Wendelberger was the local arrangements chair. George Box was the
plenary speaker. Six travel scholarships were awarded to students giving contributed
papers; SPES contributed $600 for these.
1999 conference is in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fred Hulting is the local chair, Bill Meeker
is the program chair. Two SPES appointees are needed for the SRC Management Committee,
although this committee does very little. More details in attachment.
2000 conference is in Seattle, Washington, joint with the Q&P Research Conference.
- Fall Technical Conference (Tobias): 1998 conference is in Corning, New
York. Connie Borror will take over as SPES program chair for the FTC for 1999. Call for
papers is attached.
- JSM 1998 Program (Beattie): Five roundtable discussions were scheduled
this year by Darryl Downing, apparently they were well attended. No other information
available on popularity of SPES sessions.
- JSM 1999 Program (Downing): Eight proposals for invited sessions were
reviewed
- Spatial Methods for Mine-Field Detection (Cressie et al)
- Bayesian Methods for Physical Measurements (Vangel et al)
- Statistical Models for Growth Curves(?) (Leslie Moore, Joanne Wendelberger et al)
- Transportation Emissions (Tim Coburn)
- Statistical Science in the Dept of Defense (Nancy Spruell)
- Multiple Response Experiments (Montgomery, Khuri, Myers)
- Chemometrics for Pharmaceutical R&D (Wold et al)
- Industry/Academia Gap (M Sutherland, Dan Thorpe)
The executive committee encouraged Downing to favor sessions with broad appeal because
attendance determines the number of allocated sessions in future years.
- Publications (Hulting; attachment): 1997 SPES proceedings contains 34
papers, down from 68 in 1996! Further investigation is needed(?)
- Web Site (Tobias; attachment): A map of the SPES web site is attached.
Dan Meyer on behalf of SPES will ask ASA to move our web site to the ASA server, and ask
for disk space to be designated for ftp usage.
- Newsletter (Cornell): Corwin Atwood will replace Pete Hovey as
Newsletter Editor.
- Appointed Positions (Buckingham): New/continuing appointees for 1999
are
- Publications: Pete Hovey
- Webmaster: Randy Tobias
- Newsletter: Cory Atwood
- FTC: Connie Borror
- SRC Program: Bill Meeker
- Operations Manual: Walt Morgan
- Publicity: Ron Fricker
- Membership: Liz Schiferl, Kim Vukovinsky
- Liaison: [vacant]
- Awards: [vacant, but Mark Vangel will continue if no volunteers]
- SRC Management: [two vacancies]
- Education: [vacant]
Feb. 6, 1999 - Council of Sections Governing
Board Meeting
Steve Vardeman
- The Council of Sections meeting at JSM is on Sunday Aug 8. They typically set aside a
few minutes per section to report on any "successes" achieved in the past year.
Start thinking about a SPES success story to share. Send descriptions to John Spurrier or
Dan Meyer.
- The ASA office will shortly be sending a mailing to section chairs and treasurers. This
will concern section budgets preparation for fiscal year 2000.
- ASA will also be sending a separate mailing to chairs and treasurers, a call for section
proposals for new Member Initiatives. ASA has earmarked $75K to target new strategic
initiatives for improving the visibility, activity, operation, and livelihood of the
profession. Sections are encouraged to develop initiatives on their own, and to compete
directly for the $75K. If SPES does decide to undertake a strategic initiative proposal,
we should send it to Steve Vardeman.
- General reminder: Sections can find themselves with substantial annual surplus balances
if their service efforts are not extensive enough. As part of the budget process SPES
should be sure to plan spending commensurate with income.
- ASA has named Brian Yandell, U. of Wisconsin, Web Editor to coordinate and oversee
Amstat Online (the ASA Web Site) as of June 1. This position is distinct from the ASA
Webmaster's duties, which are more technical/maintenance oriented. Seven (7) Online
Associate Editor (AE) positions will be filled over the next few months. These AE's will
be responsible for very specific Web areas, such as "Technology",
"Outreach", etc. The list of areas is available online on Brian Yandell's web site
Look for the LAST seven categories. (The first four are being filled in a different
manner.) Please feel free to contact Brian directly if interested. .
- ASA expects to involve section Webmasters/Internet officers in more and more
Association-level material. Section web-masters are asked to attend special planning
meetings at the upcoming JSM in Baltimore (probably Wed. morning, Aug. 11).
- The ASA Webmaster, Linda Javins , has put aside a spot on the ASA Web Site for
highlighting any "New and exciting" reports from ASA members. This can include
section activities, so please ask your executives to keep this in mind, and to send Linda
(perhaps via your section Webmasters) any pertinent material.
- Council of Sections maintains an information booth at the JSM at these times: Sun.,
1:00pm - 4:00pm Mon. from 10:00am - 2:00pm. Sections are being asked to provide volunteers
(with preferred time slots) to staff the booth during these times. The duty lasts 1-2
hours.
- ASA has received a proposal to establish a new section on Nonparametric Statistics. The
proposal will be reviewed and possibly voted on at the Council of Sections business
meeting August 8th.
- Section officers should attend Planning and/or Orientation meetings appropriate for
their positions at the JSM in Baltimore. These include Chair Responsibility reviews for
Chair-elects and Chair- elect-elects; Fiscal planning for all Treasurers AND Chairs;
Program orientations for Program Chairs; and Publications/Internet reviews for all
Publication and Internet/Web officers. Times and dates for these meetings will be sent to
the various individuals prior to the JSM.
- The ASA has put forth a draft update for its Guidelines of Ethical Practice, for
revision later this year. We have been informed that the URL is http://www.amstat.org/about/ethics.html
All ASA members are encouraged to view the draft and provide any comments to the Ethics
Committee chair.
- Steve Vardeman represents SPES on the Council of Sections Governing Board. We should be
sure to bring any section concerns to his attention at any time.
Mar. 8, 1999 - SPES Chair's News Brief
Janet Buckingham
- Web Page Updated - Thanks to Randy Tobias for updating the ASA/SPES web
page. You should see an updated SPES contact list with addresses, phone numbers, fax
numbers, and e-mail addresses. If you still see mistakes, let me know and I will
consolidate them for Randy. Also, if you have just assumed a new SPES position, please
check the web page to see if the web information for your SPES-area needs updating. There
is still some dated material out there in some areas. If you would like to have it
updated, please submit the info to Randy Tobias and cc: to me. Randy is great at getting
the information out there quickly.
- 1999 JSM Courses - Both of our co-sponsored courses were accepted by
the ASA for presentation at the JSM in Baltimore. Greg Piepel and Randy Tobias will be
presenting a one-day course on Sunday, August 8 on "Designing Experiments for
Irregular Regions". James Spall will be presenting a half-day course on Tuesday
afternoon, August 10 on "Stochastic Optimization and the Simultaneous Perturbation
Algorithm". Spall's course is also being co-sponsored by the Statistical Graphics
Section. Thanks to all of these presenters for their efforts on behalf of SPES.
- Spring Research Conference Committee - Andrew Booker (The Boeing
Company) has agreed to serve on the SRC Management Committee for 1999-01. Thanks, Andrew!
- Membership Listings - I have an ASCII text file of the SPES-only and
SPES/Q&P memberships as of Feb/99. Let me know if you would like me to send you a
copy. This should be used for SPES/ASA business only!
- Budget Requests - Every year during our JSM SPES Executive Business
Meeting we are asked by various groups/organizations to donate SPES funds to their causes.
Every year it becomes more and more difficult to make these decisions because (a) we don't
fully understand their needs, (2) we don't receive any feedback on whether our financial
assisstance was benefical, and (3) we don't know how much money they need. So, this year I
would like to try something new. I would like to have each organization requesting money
to fill out a "Financial Request Form" detailing such things as why they need
the $, how they are going to distribute it, when they need it, how much they need, etc.
SPES would only consider donations to those organizations submitting the form. What do you
think? Is anyone interested in helping me with this? Is it a bad idea? I would like to get
this going ASAP so that we can have it in place long before JSM comes around.
- JSM Housing Correction - Lee Decker (ASA Meeting Manager) sent me this
info:
An incorrect toll-free number was published on the housing form in the recent Amstat
News. The correct toll-free number for US calls is 1-877-288-3441.
- COS - The Council of Section Governing Board met on Feb 6, 1999. A
condensed version of the meeting minutes was placed on our web page under
"Miscellaneous Minutes".
Time is sure flying by this year. The bluebonnets are already up in Texas and Little
League season has started. Spring fever will find us scurrying to get outside to enjoy the
sunshine (my apologies to those of you who are still weathering the cold)!
Here is the monthly SPES stuff......
- Amstat News: Ron Fricker is doing a great job at reminding us to send
him SPES-related articles for AMSTAT NEWS. Remember that he needs to get those articles
off to the ASA office by the first of each month. So, think ahead now if you would like to
get something in the June issue and send it to Ron.
- SPES Meetings at the JSM: I was finally asked by the ASA office to
submit our requests for SPES meetings at the JSM. Here is what I have requested:
| SPES Executive Meeting |
Tuesday, Aug. 10, 8:00-11:00am |
| Chemometrics Subcommittee Meeting |
Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2:00pm |
| SPES/Q&P Joint Business Meeting and Mixer |
Tuesday, Aug. 10, 5:30-7:30pm |
I'll let you know in future e-mails if these times are
accepted.
- FTC Moderators: Connie Borror needs to locate some session moderators
for the FTC in October. This year's FTC will be held in Houston, Texas. Contact Connie by
Aprtil 13 at conni@asu.edu if you would like to help.
- SPES Newsletter: Cory Atwood has been busy gathering articles for the
next section newsletter. He has done a great job for his "first issue". Look for
the newsletter to arrive in your mailboxes in June.
- Operating Manual: Walt Morgan would like some help in reviewing the
remaining sections of the Section Operating Manual. He feels pretty comfortable with the
job descriptions (but if you haven't submitted one for your position please do so now!).
He will be re-writing some sections and would like others to review his draft re-writes.
If you can help Walt with any of these sections, please contact him at morganw@rjrt.com.
- CE Course Cancelled: The JSM CE course proposed by Greg Piepel and
Randy Tobias has been withdrawn. Greg is involved in a very intense 4-month project and
will not be able to commit the time to put together the type of quality course he would
like. So, maybe we will be able to submit this course again next year for JSM 2000. We
apologize for any problems this may cause.
- SPES E-mail Addresses: I found out something interesting with my e-mail
software. It will only hold addresses in the TO: box for total character strings of length
x! That means that the entire list of SPES people will not fit in one e-mail message. I
have to send three separate e-mails to three separate lists. That may sound like a bad
thing, but it just proves that alot of people are involved in SPES. So, if you want to
send something to the entire 1999 officers/chairs/significant VIPs, don't rely on the
addresses that appear in your TO: box from this message. Go to the SPES web page and get
the addresses you need. Or, send me a message and I will send them to you.
- Lastly, I have talked to alot of SPES peole in the last month and I keep hearing a
recurring situation. Everybody is BUSY, BUSY, BUSY. There have either been cutbacks in
statistics staff, re-engineering (is that still going on?), critical short-fuse projects,
or just alot of work. I know it is not easy putting in extra time to do
"volunteer" work, such as SPES. I thank you for whatever time you have to devote
to SPES and appreciate your efforts to participate in our activities.
Just a 'short' note on the SPES happenings. Be sure to send me information on your
committees/programs if you need help. I can add your requests to the monthly SPES news
brief.
- Spring Research Conference: The Spring Research Conference is ready to
roll in a few weeks, June 2-4 in Minneapolis, MN. Lots of SPES people have been working on
this conference and it looks like it should be a great success. Thanks to Bill Meeker,
Fred Hulting, and Rob Easterling for all their efforts in organizing this meeting.
- Fall Technical Conference: Connie Borror has agreed to continue as the
Fall Technical Conference SPES Program Committee Representative for the Year 2000. Thanks,
Connie!
- Awards Committee: Will Guthrie is the Chair of the Awards Committee
this year. This committee is in charge of organizing the awards for Outstanding Paper
Presentations at the JSM in Baltimore. Anyone attending the JSM this year who can help
Will and the Awards Committee should contact him ASAP. You can reach Will at NIST, (301)
975-2854 or will.guthrie@nist.gov. Thanks for
your help!
- JSM in Baltimore: I will be sending you a draft agenda in early July
for the SPES Executive Committee meeting to be held Tuesday, August 10, 8:00-11:00am.
Please let me know if you have an agenda item you would like for the committee to discuss.
We often discuss financial contributions during this meeting from a variety of worthy
groups. Anyone wishing to request monies from the SPES budget will need to submit a SPES
FINANCIAL REQUEST FORM at the meeting. We are finalizing this form now and should have it
ready by early June. Please send me an e-mail and I will send you a copy of the form. We
are hoping this process will facilitate informative decisions with respect to how SPES
uses their treasury. Any ideas or comments are welcome!
- SPES Executive Committee meeting: If you will be attending/not
attending the SPES Executive Committee meeting please let me know.
- Industrial Speakers Program: Lynne Hare and Karen Kafadar have decided
to step down as co-chairs of the Industrial Speakers Program. Both are extremely busy and
have come to the realization that they did not have the time to properly administer the
program. We are thankful to them for the work they have done for the past 1 1/2 years.
Lynne has found someone to chair this program: Mark Vandeven at Nabisco. He has just
completed his PhD and is ready to get involved with SPES. Mark will become chair of this
program immediately.
We are well into the summer season ... vacations ... hot weather ... JSM!!!
Just a few items for your interest before I send out the JSM agenda in the July news
brief .....
- Spring Research Conference: I asked Fred Hulting to give me his
comments on the SRC held last week. Here is what he had to say: "By all accounts, the
SRC was very successful! Between the Conference and Short Course, we had 170 participants,
making it one of the best attended SRCs. Both the invited and contributed programs turned
out to be very strong, particularly in the areas of Reliability and Design of Experiments.
We succeeded in creating an atmosphere that fostered discussion among the researchers, and
I have heard of a few new collaborations that have started as a result of the conference.
Gerry Hahn delivered a great keynote address on the "Proactive Statistician"
that started the conference off on the right foot. The two plenary talks (by Pramod
Khargonekar and Diane Lambert) also received high-praise. Everyone had a chance to get out
and see the city of Minneapolis as well. All is all, it was great!" Thanks to Bill
Meeker, Fred Hulting, Rob Easterling and the entire SRC committee on a very successful
meeting!!!
- Election Results: The results of the ASA elections for section officers
have been tabulated. Congratulations to the following officers who will represent SPES
starting in January 2000:
- Chair-Elect: Chris Nachtsheim, University of Minnesota
- Program Chair-Elect: Joanne Wendelberger, Los Alamos National
Laboratory
- Secretary/Treasurer: Robert Wilkinson, The Lubrizol Corporation
- Representative to the Council Of Sections: Margaret Nemeth, Monsanto
Company
I would also like to thank the other candidates for their interest in SPES and hope
they remain supportive of SPES and its activities.
- SPES/Q&P Newsletter: Cory Atwood has been doing a great job in
gathering articles for the section newsletter (which should be in the mail to you in the
next week or two). Please be supportive of the newsletter and provide Cory with
information you would like broadcast to the entire SPES and Q&P membership!
- AmStat News: Ron Fricker has been diligently providing SPES information
to this ASA publication on a monthly basis. Thank you, Ron, for all the work you do to
keep us informed!
- JSM SPES Executive Committee meeting: So far the following people have
indicated their attendance at the SPES Exec Meeting at the JSM on Tuesday, Aug. 10
8:00-11:00am: Atwood, Borror, Buckingham, Cornell, Meyer, Rodriguez, Spurrier,
Wendelberger, and Wilkinson. Let me know if you plan to attend (or not attend).
Greetings from San Antonio - Home of the 1999 NBA Champion SPURS!!! (Sorry, I couldn't
resist!)
It's about time to be heading off for JSM in Baltimore. Here are some items of interest
for our upcoming SPES meetings:
- SPES Gatherings at the JSM: The ASA office has had problems recently
with their JSM-related mailings. As of this date I do not have the room assignments for
our SPES meetings. So, here is a reminder of the dates and times (check your JSM program
for the rooms):

To be held somewhere in the Baltimore Convention Center |
We are going to try something different this year to help offset the outrageous fees we
get charged for liquor and bartender service at the mixer. There will be a central
bartending station set-up outside the mixer meeting room. We will share this station with
other sections who are also conducting their business meetings. We will distribute 1-2
"free" drink tickets to those attending the mixer. Any drinks after that will be
on a cash bar basis. That way we will also "share" the expenses of the
bartending staff with the other sections. All the food items will be in our room. So, come
early and enjoy the fun! Don't forget to let Fred Hulting know if you are willing to
donate a door prize!
- Executive Committee Agenda: Listed below is a draft agenda for the SPES
Exec Committee meeting. As far as I know the following members will be present: Cory
Atwood, Connie Borror, Janet Buckingham, John Cornell, Darryl Downing, Rob Easterling,
Pete Hovery, Fred Hulting, Dan Meyer, Chris Nachtsheim, Margie Nemeth, Greg Piepel, Bob
Rodriguez, John Spurrier, Randy Tobias, Joanne Wendelberger, and Bob Wilkinson. If you are
planning to attend, please send me an e-mail. If not, please send me a brief
writeup/report on your activities and I will distribute it at the meeting.
Perry
Haaland (Secretary/Treasurer) will not be attending the JSM this year. So, I am looking
for a volunteer to take minutes at the exec cmte meeting. If you can writeup a draft of
the minutes I would be happy to edit them. Please give me a call if you can help out!

JSM Program Chair-Elect (2001, Chair in 2002)
Rep to the Council of Sections (2001-2003)
August 10, 1999 - SPES Executive Committee
Meeting
Janet Buckingham
Tuesday, August 10, 1998
8:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Baltimore, MD
Attendees: Janet Buckingham, John Spurrier, Bob Wilkinson, John Cornell,
Greg Piepel, Bob Rodriguez, Mark Vandeven, Will Guthrie, Joanne Wendelberger, Marge
Nemeth, Kirk Remund, Fred Hulting, Dan Meyer, Darryl Downing, Rob Easterling, Pete Hovey,
Mark Vangel, Cory Atwood, Chris Nachtsheim, Randy Tobias
- Minutes from 1998 Executive Committee meeting at the JSM in Dallas were approved
unanimously.
- Financial report: Janet Buckingham presented a report on SPES finances. We are
spending about the same as last year, and are on target. We have $26,572 cash on hand at
the end of June.
- Council of Sections report (Spurrier)
-
(John Spurrier reported our web page is considered by ASA as one of the
best among the sections.)
- Proposals for CE workshops and courses for the 2000 JSM are due to the ASA by October
15th.
- Strategic Planning Initiatives:
1999 - $35,000 to upgrade ASA technology and on-line support.
2000 - $100,000 is available; board looking for proposals; cost share is welcomed;
initiatives should tie to specific items in the strategic plan.
- ASA Board items: ethical guidelines were approved; a committee on electronic
guidelines was formed; dues were increased from $74 to $80; additional on-line services
are anticipated; ASA directory and CD are being sent in the mail.
- There is continued interest in having statisticians serve as statistical reviewers for
non-statistical journals. Ray Waller is willing to send thank you letter to editors (or
reviewers) who do this. Contact Mary Fleming for more
information.
- A new section on nonparametric statistics was approved (effective 1/1/2000).
- Section budgets are due September 30th. There will be no preliminary budgets this year.
There is a continued concern about large surpluses in the sections accounts.
- There are proposed revisions to the Council of Sections Charter including a provision
that would have the COS review a sections charter periodically and a provision
clarifying that joint Q&P/SPES members are counted as members of both sections.
- ASA is attempting to collect demographic information on all members for their database.
About 33% of members provided this information. This information can be entered via the
ASA web site (members only section).
- Rich Allen from the committee on archives and historical materials wants each section to
write/update their history. SPES did this for the sesquicentennial.
- Examples of other sections successes: Student paper award, round table
discussion for young investigators (buy them lunch), corporate sponsorship of sessions,
list servers set up for communicating with members.
- Mary Fleming is interested in specific items of
information we want about our members.
- Brian Yandell (ASA web editor) is producing AMSTAT Online.
- Some sections are publishing their proceedings electronically rather in book form. We
should contact the ASA if SPES is interested in doing this. Pete Hovey is taking the lead
on this for SPES (see Publications
below.)
- Funding requests/ideas:
- Support 10 students/young investigators at a roundtable at 2000 JSM (approved).
- Travel stipends to 2000 FTC for students/young investigators. John Cornell will be
gathering some further information about how to proceed here (advertising, etc.).
- Industrial Speakers Program (Vandeven). The following items were approved:
- Money to be spent only on travel expenses.
- Maximum travel reimbursement: $500 (increased from $250).
- Supplement the Marquardt Memorial Speaker fund by $1,500.
- Awards (Vangel). AMSTAT NEWS announcement will be in the fall. Will Guthrie, who
will be taking over for Mark Vangel, expressed thanks to all the volunteers for gathering
data (evaluation forms). A proposal to replace the plaque award with a certificate and
money, i.e., $100 for the winner, $50 for the runner up, $25 for honorable mention (2 of
these) was approved (effective 2000 JSM). A proposal to restrict someone from receiving
any of the best presentation awards (winner, runner-up or honorable mention) for 2
consecutive years was defeated. A proposal to restrict the winner of the best presentation
award from receiving any award the following year was approved. The best presentation
awards (winner, runner-up, and two honorable mentions) will only be given to the person
giving the presentation at the JSM.
- Continuing Education. The SPES Education Chair resigned. Send ideas for proposals
for JSM continuing education courses to Janet Buckingham. These proposals have to be
submitted to ASA by October 15th.
- Chemometrics Committee (Remund).
- Statistics in Chemistry Award: Award was not given in 1999 (one submission which
was not worthy of the award). The new subcommittee chair is mailto:Kristin.Jarman@pnl.gov. Looking for new
sponsor of the $2000 award (Pharmacia & Upjohn past sponsor).
- Invited Paper Session: Subcommittee chaired by Kwan Lee; co-sponsored by
Biopharmaceutical Section. 1999 Invited Paper Session: Chemometrics for
Pharmaceutical Research and Development, by Svante Wold, Nouna Kettaneh, Weifan
Zheng. Currently, no plans for invited paper session at JSM 2000.
- Nominations Committee. Candidates for elected positions (chair-elect, JSM program
chair-elect, and COS rep) need to be submitted to ASA by 9/17/1999.
- Committee to Nominate Fellows (Cornell/Piepel). Three SPES identified candidates
were elected in 1999 (Jim Higgins, Art Fries, Al Liebetrau). Send names for consideration
of fellow nomination and also names of nominators for 2000 to John Cornell.
- Operating Manual should be completed in early fall, and be available via the web. The
following job descriptions are missing: JSM Program Chair-Elect, COS Representatives, Web
Master, Awards Chair, and Membership Chair.
- Spring Research Conference (Easterling). The 1999 conference was held in
Minneapolis, MN and was extremely successful with 160 persons attending and $6000 profit.
The June 26th-28th, 2000, conference will be jointly sponsored with Q&P and held in
Seattle. Ideas are still being soliciting (SPES contact: Andrew Booker). A proposal to
allocate $600 to sponsor 2 student paper presenters travel was approved. The site
for the year 2001 is undecided with Atlanta being considered.
- Fall Technical Conference (Buckingham for Borror). The 43rd FTC will be held
October 14-15 in Houston, Tx. There will be a SPES exec committee meeting on 10/13 at 7:30
PM. Connie Borror will assume the Technical Program Committee Chair position in 2001.
- 1999 JSM Program (Downing). There were 89 SPES talks in 16 different sessions.
There was a comment made that scheduling of SPES and Q&P sessions of similar topical
areas should not be assigned at the same time.
- 2000 JSM Program (Rodriguez). Bob Rodriguez presented proposals for sessions.
Input on these proposals should be sent to Bob by end of August. We should encourage
people to contribute papers at JSM as this may be used to determine how many invited
sessions we are allocated in the future. Bob asked for volunteers to lead roundtable
discussions.
- Publications (Hovey). 36 papers submitted for
proceedings. Pete will discuss further with ASA options for electronic printing of the
proceedings and will seek out a local company that can publish the material
electronically.
- Web Page (Tobias). The site was migrated to ASAs server (http://www.amstat.org/sections/spes/).
- Newsletter (Atwood).Going well; open to new articles and ideas.
- Publicity (Buckingham for Fricker). The section flyer is complete and looks great.
- Membership Committee (Buckingham for Schiferl/Vukovinsky). Some ideas to improve
membership include surveying past members to determine why they left, create brochure on
SPES to send to new members, establish process with ASA to receive names of new members
and those whose memberships have expired, and speak with non-members who might logically
be members.
- Appointed Positions for 2000 (Hulting). Many available; send suggestions to Fred
Hulting.
- Other Business. Budget due 9/30/1999.
Time to catch up on the SPES happenings....
- JSM - Thanks to everyone involved in the JSM this year. We had some great
meetings and it was good to see everyone's smiling face again. Hats off to Darryl Downing
for organizing some really fantastic sessions and to Bob Rodriguez for a variety of
interesting round table luncheons. We had a very well-attended SPES Exec committee meeting
on Tuesday morning. Thanks to everyone who gave reports, provided information, and helped
with the planning. We got alot done in a short amount of time. Attached to this e-mail are
the meeting minutes. Please review them for information as I will not repeat it in this
message. Special thanks to Bob Wilkinson and John Cornell for compiling the minutes. Great
job!
- Mixer - The joint mixer with the Q&P section was also well attended. Thanks
to Fred Hulting for gathering and organizing the door prizes. We finally got a bigger
room! Yea!
- Budget - We are getting ready to submit the SPES budget for next year. Approved
at the JSM meeting were the following additions to the current budget items:
- Increase the donation to the Marquardt Industrial Speakers Program fund to $1500.
- Support 10 students/young investigators at a roundatble luncheon next year at the 2000
JSM ($250).
- Best Presentation Awards at the JSM will be monetary: $100 for the winner, $50 for
runner-up and two $25 honorable mentions ($200 total).
- Support two student paper presenter's travel expenses at the Spring Research Conference
by $300 each ($600 total).
If you know of any additional funding requests, please send them to me ASAP!
- FTC - The SPES Executive Committee will meet at the FTC in Houston this year. It
is scheduled for Wednesday night, October 13 at 7:30 pm. Please check at the registration
desk for the room number. Also, please let me know if you are planning on attending and
will/will not make the meeting.
Dear SPES VIPers:
- Budget - Perry Haaland, Fred Hulting and myself have reviewed the SPES budget
estimates for 2000. Perry has sent the budget to the ASA office. Basically we are
continuing to spend as much as we bring in, so our approximate final balance is
$24,000-25,000. If you have any ideas on new opportunities for SPES to serve its
membership (and they involve $$$), please let me know.
- FTC - The FTC is coming up soon. Connie Borror has done a great job with the
program and it looks like a great conference. Some of you may have gotten your FTC
registration brochure late (a mixup we hope to correct next year!), so if you are planning
to attend please get your registration in now. The attendance so far is down from last
year. Also, SPES will be having a meeting for all SPES members on Wednesday night, October
13, at 7:30pm. Check the room number in your registration packet. So far I have only heard
from the following people who will be attending: Borror, Rodriguez and Waller. Anyone else
planning to attend - please let me know soon!
- CE Courses at JSM - We have identified 2 courses to be proposed for presentation
at the 2000 JSM. Bill Meeker and Luis Escobar will be offering their one-day course on
"Statistical Methods for Failure Time and Accelerated Test Data". This course
was presented in Dallas at the 1998 JSM and was very successful. We will be co-sponsoring
the course with the Q&P section. The second course is a 1/2-day offering by Todd Ogden
on "Wavelets in the Real World: Concepts and Applications". Todd has presented
this topic to several groups, including ASA chapters. Both of these proposals will be
reviewed by the ASA - we should know in early January if they are accepted.
- Newsletter - Cory Atwood is gathering articles for the December newsletter. If
you have any information you would like to include, please let Cory know your plans. He
needs all articles by October 20.
- Please let me know if you will be attending the SPES meeting at the FTC.....
Dear SPES Vipers:
Here's the lastest SPES news......
- 1999 FTC - Thanks to all who attended the FTC meeting this year in Houston.
Attendance was down from previous years and we will be working on ways to get the numbers
back up. Hats off to to Connie Borror, our FTC Technical Committee Program Rep, for
representing our section at the conference. Thanks, Connie! Also, special thanks to Ray
Waller, ASA Executive Director, who gave a very informative (and humorous) Friday luncheon
talk.
- 2000 JSM - Bob Rodriguez, 2000 JSM Program Chair, has been diligently working on
the invited paper sessions at next year's JSM. Bob sent me the following information to
share with the SPES executive committee and other appointed officers....
| I have some good news to report ... SPES won a fourth invited session in
the open competition for extra invited sessions. Only four additional sessions were
available in the competition (down from around ten last year), and around 25 sessions were
entered into the competition. Here's the complete list of our invited sessions:
- Statistical Challenges in the Semiconductor Industry (Barry Hembree)
- New Ideas for Old Problems in Chemometrics (David Banks)
- Experiments for Optimization and Robustness (Jeff Wu)
- Sample Size Issues (Panel Discussion) (Russ Lenth) (competition winner)
I am now looking for people to organize topic (special) contributed sessions, so please
let me know if you are interested (or know of someone else). A call for topic sessions
will appear in the December newsletter, but I would like to get started early. I already
have at least two commitments for topic sessions, but I would really like to arrange more.
There is no limit on the number of topic sessions that we can run. They last 110 minutes,
allowing for five speakers and ten minutes of floor discussion. Topic sessions may not
carry quite the prestige of invited sessions, but they form an important part of our
program because they are focused on the interests of our members. The deadline for
submitting abstracts for contributed papers is February 1. |
So, if you are interested in organizing a topic contributed session at the 2000 JSM in
Indianapolis, please contact Bob Rodriguez at sasrnr@wnt.sas.com
- NEWSLETTER - Cory Atwood has been gathering articles and news stories for the
December issue of the section newsletter. Watch your mail near the end of the year for the
next SPES/Q&P NEWS.
- CANDIDATE - Carolyn Morgan, one of our COS Rep candidates for 2001-2003, had to
withdraw her name from the ballot. Luckily, we found a new candidate - Dave Sartori! Dave
works at PPG Industries and will be running with John Cornell for the next vacant COS Rep
position. Good luck, gentlemen!
That's all the news for now. I will be completing my term as Chair soon and will be
handing over the reins to Fred Hulting. Fred will be a great chair and I encourage you to
continue to communicate all your wants, needs, and ideas to Fred, just as you have done so
with me this year. Thanks for all the great support you have provided me during this year.
Hello SPES VIPers -
Here's the lastest SPES news......
- Officers - Attached please find the updated Contact
List and Who's Who list. I made some corrections, and we added a continuing education
chair: Shane Reese from Los Alamos. Welcome, Shane!
- 2000 JSM - As I write this, Bob Rodriguez is finalizing the JSM program in a
meeting at ASA. Bob will be sending everyone a review of the program shortly. However, the
program is really looking great. Bob helped secure a total of five invited sessions, and
has assembled some very good topic contributed sessions as well. Thanks, Bob! In support
of these sessions, the SPES Executive Committee approved $325 to support some non-ASA
speakers.
Joanne Wendelberger has lined up the following five roundtables for the JSM:
"Publication of Statistical Applications" (Karen Kafadar),
"State-of-the-Art Calibration Methods" (Cliff Spiegelman), "Data
Integration" (Alyson Wilson), "Teaching Statistics in an Industrial
Setting" (Donald McCormack)and "Degradation Data Analysis and Modeling"
(Luis Escobar). See the web page for more details. SPES is also awarding ten Young
Investigator scholarships to students wishing to attend these roundtables. Interested
applicats need to contact Joanne by April 30.
Both of our short course proposals for the JSM have been accepted. A one-day course on
"Statistical Methods for Failure-Time and Accelerated Test Data" will be
presented by Bill Meeker and Luis Escobar. A half-day course on "Wavelets in the Real
World" will be presented by Todd Ogden.
Finally, it is never too early to start thinking about sessions for 2001. If you have
ideas, please let Joanne know. These need to be settled soon after the 2000 meeting.
- FTC Short Course - For the first time, SPES is able to sponsor a short-course at
the Fall Technical Conference. The FTC short course committee has accepted the course
"Statistical Methods for Reliabilty Data" by Bill Meeker and Luis Escobar. It
will be held on the Wednesday before the FTC (October 11).
- SPES Newsletter - As I indicated in an email a few weeks ago, SPES and Q&P
have been looking hard at the newsletter production arrangements, following two
consecutive "problem" issues. During a recent conference call between
SPES/Q&P representatives, it was decided to continue with the ASA production office
for the June issue. Before a decision is made regarding the December Issue and beyond,
more fact-finding will take place. We expect a decision regarding these future issues to
be made in August.
- Spring Research Conference - The program for SRC 2000 is taking shape, so be sure
to check out the 2000 SRC web site for the latest on that conference (www.boeing.com/jrc2000/). And start making plans
to be in Seattle, June 26-28!
- Miscellaneous
- Remember to send your items for Amstat News to Jennifer Van Mullekom; this month's
deadline is Feb 28th. And thank you to all of you who have been sending information about
your committees to Randy Tobias for posting to the web site. If we can keep the
information current, we greatly enhance the value of the site.
- The Council of Sections will be seeking funding from the Board of Directors to fund a
strategic initiative for making the section proceedings available electronically (probably
via CD-ROM). Pete Hovey, our publications chair will be our contact; please send your
thoughts to Pete.
- The Section Officers Handbook is a valuable resource, and you can now access it online
at the ASA web site, under the Council of Sections: http://www.amstat.org/sections/cos/handbook/.
Well, that's all I can think of for now - thanks again to all of you for your hard
work! I know that you all juggle many commitments at work and at home, so please know that
the time you contribute to SPES is appreciated!
SPES VIPers!
Welcome to the April SPES News brief!
- JRC - Don't forget to register for the Joint Research Conference in June. You'll
find the program has now been posted at the website. As a past chair, I can vouch
for the quality of this conference, and I will be attending again this year. I encourage
you to think about attending, and to please pass the word to your colleagues and let them
know about it.
- 2000 JSM - As I've reported before, JSM plans are pretty much set. I'll forward
final schedules for the Executive Comm meeting and mixer when they are approved. However,
it looks like these will take place on Tuesday, as usual.
- FTC - The FTC program has been finalized, and its looking good! At last years
Exec Comm meeting, we discussed student scholarships for the FTC, but did not act on them.
John Cornell recently gathered information about this, and I believe that such
scholarships are consistent with our mission and a good use of funds. There was little
support for pushing them through in the middle of this year, so I will place this on the
agenda for our meeting at the JSM.
- Electronic Proceedings - I appreciate the many comments you all sent regarding
electronic proceedings. Everyone appears to be in agreement that this is the wave of the
future, and best serves the interests of our entire membership. Pete Hovey and I are
working with the Q&P folks to see if we can split costs and share resources to help
make this happen for this year, as both sections are in a similar place. At this point I
believe the main issue is cost and revenue, so our next step is getting a firm proposal
for producing the electronic version, and working out our revenue sources. If anyone is
interested in helping with this effort, please let me know. I think this could really
benefit from more folks being involved.
- Publicity - Jennifer Huffman has done a great job of filling up our SPES column
in the Amstat News. Be sure to get Jennifer your items for the June issue by April 28.
Note that SPES also gets an allotment of 1 page per year of advertising space in Amstat
News. We have typically used only about 1/3 of this in support of the SRC. Rather than let
the remainder go unused, Jennifer is planning to use our remaining space to run a
promotional ad for the section in the July issue. This space will highlight some of our
JSM activities, as well as tout the benefits of SPES to members and non-members alike. If
any of you have 'why I like SPES' comment that may help Jennifer put this together, please
pass it on to her!
- By the way, what Happened to the March News Brief? - Finally, I want to apologize
for being a bit out of touch this past month. As with many companies in non-technology
sectors, Pillsbury's performance (and stock!) has lagged, and so the company just
undertook a major layoff and restructuring that directly affected our statistics group.
Recovering from that event had caused me to put SPES on the back burner for awhile.
Of course, in the meantime, all of you have been hard at work, keeping things going! Thank
you for making your time and energy available to SPES! Your effort is greatly appreciated!
Fred
August 15, 2000 - SPES Executive Committee
Meeting
Robert G. Wilkinson
Tuesday, August 15, 2000
8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Indianapolis, IN
Attendees: Fred Hulting, Bob Wilkinson, Connie Borror, Bob Rodriguez,
Pete Hovey, Bruce Ankenman, Will Guthrie, Greg Piepel, Dan Meyer, Margie Nemeth, Cory
Atwood, Ruey Wang, Shane Reese, Randy Tobias, Jennifer Van Mullekom, Janet Buckingham,
Mark Vandeven, Rob Easterling, Chris Nachtsheim, Joanne Wendelberger
- Minutes from 1999 Executive Committee meeting, JSM, approved unanimously.
- Financial report (Wilkinson). Our finances havent changed very much from
last year. We have $27,210 on hand at the end of June. In 1999, we had $26,572 on hand.
Travel stipends ($600) for the SRC were mistakenly charged to the SPES/IMS account. Bob
will ask ASA to move this to the general ASA account. Also, Bob will check into the status
of the Marquardt account.
- Council of Sections report Dan Meyer/Margie Nemeth presented items from the
Sunday meeting. Some highlights:
- Electronic Proceedings: There is an ASA proposal to distribute all
sections proceedings on CD-ROM. The CDs would cost $20 to buy. Revenues depend on
the number sold (2500 is the break even point). Each sections revenue is
proportional to the number of papers in the proceedings. The proposal is for 2001. SPES
voted unanimously to support this proposal, and would eventually like to see the
proceedings online. Dan Meyer/Margie Nemeth will also convey to ASA a suggestion to charge
$5 more for the conference, and give all registered persons a copy of the CD.
- ASA is assessing whether there is a desire to have JAVA applet availability on the ASA
web site. No strong needs were expressed
- Fred will respond to a survey about sections needs on conferences/workshops.
- ASA is concerned about persons/companies being solicited for money from multiple ASA
sources, and has proposed that all solicitations over $1000 go through ASA. This was not
well received at the SPES business meeting.
- Miscellaneous Items: Membership is flat; very few members belong to a
section; may build a new ASA building; Ray Wallers (Executive Director) term expires
next year; ASA staff retention is OK; there is a proposal for ASA to take over the
financial aspects of conferences, and charge us 25-30% of the budget (not well received by
SPES).
- Funding requests/ideas:
- The following funding requests were all approved unanimously:
| Request |
Amount |
| Spring Research Conference Student Scholarships |
$800 |
| Fall Technical Conference Student Scholarships |
$400 |
| Support for the Gordon Research Conference |
$1500 |
| Support for the Undergraduate Data Analysis Contest |
$250 |
| Student stipends and discussion leaders for JSM luncheons |
10 persons and 5 discussion leaders |
| JSM speaker awards |
$200 ($100 first, $50 second, and two $25 honorable mentions) |
| Support for continuing education at JSM for a student |
$250 |
- Other Ideas (not approved/voted on):
- Student travel stipend to JSM if get fellow students to sign up for SPES
- JSM travel stipends for students
- Student speaker awards at JSM
- Publications.
- Pete Hovey investigated electronic proceedings for SPES (this may be a moot point if ASA
proposal passes).
- There were numerous complaints voiced about not receiving ASA mailings. Pete Hovey will
convey our concerns to ASA.
- Items to be posted on SPESs web site should be sent to Randy Tobias.
- Send inputs to be included in AMSTAT News to Jennifer Van Mullekom (30th of each month).
We also have a half page of ad space left in AMSTAT News.
- Industrial Speakers Program (Vandeven). Information on the program is available
on our web site. We have funding to support up to 6 speakers per year; there have been 2
speakers so far this year. We would like to increase exposure in academia; send publicity
ideas to Mark.
- Awards (Will Guthrie). Awards for last year will be given out at the mixer. This
years awards will be announced in the December Newsletter and in AMSTAT News.
- Education (Shane Reese). Two proposals were presented (Analyzing Fractional
Factorial Experiments in the Presence of Dispersion, Decision Making Course). There were
some questions about the content of the decision making course. Shane will get more
information. Some ideas for other courses/workshops: Excel-based statistics, how to
analyze split plot designs.
- Chemometrics Committee (Wang, for Lee). An update was given.
- Spring Research Conference (Easterling). The 2000 conference was a success (180
people attended). Next years conference will be held co-sponsored by the University
of Virginia, and held in VA.
- 2000 JSM Program (Rodriguez). The number of contributed papers is down (18-20%).
Participation is also down, but CE attendance is up. SPES was well represented. Bob will
be assembling a position description for program chair.
- 2001 JSM Program (Wendelberger). SPES has 3 automatic slots for invited sessions.
Four good proposals were received; three were identified for the SPES slots, and the
fourth appears to be slated as a Q&P allocated session. A fifth proposal
(less-developed) is a candidate for open competition.
- Nominations Committee (Hulting, Nachtsheim). A slate of candidates will be
assembled for elected slots (9/15). Let Chris or Fred know of any suggestions.
- Committee to Nominate Fellows (Buckingham). Solicitation article will occur in
the October AMSTAT News. We would like to encourage nominations of SPES members.
Nominations need to be submitted by 3/1/2001. Nominees need to be ASA members for at least
3 years. Send your suggestions to Janet.
- Fall Technical Conference (Borror). Information is available at www.cpid.net
(link available from SPESs web site). There is a call for papers for the 2001 FTC in
Toronto (deadline: 1/22/2001).
- Miscellaneous (Hulting). Fred presented a handout from the Operating Manual
Committee Chair (Walt Morgan). Goal is to have a complete draft complete by 12/31/2000.
Nominations for the 2001 Deming Lecture are due by 12/1/2000.
Hi All -
Well, as we begin December (my last month as Chair) there are a few items that I can
update everyone on. In particular,
- Our New URL - I don't know if I passed this along to everyone, but SPES now has
its own domain name: www.asaspes.org! This address
points to the web site maintained by Randy Tobias. Try it out! And, continue to provide
your information updates to Randy.
- Chair-Elect - As many of you know, Jane Booker has resigned from her position as
2001 Chair-Elect because of health concerns. We all wish her well, and will miss her
experience and ability. Fortunately, Chuck Bayne has agreed to replace Jane, by
appointment from the Executive Committee. Welcome, Chuck! Chuck has worked in several
capcities for SPES in the past, and we are happy to have him back.
- Fall Technical Conference - I enjoyed this year's FTC, held here in Minneapolis.
SPES sponsored the Friday luncheon speaker (President Mike O'Fallon of the ASA).
Attendance was up over last year, but lower than in the recent past.
We held a brief Section meeting on the Wednesday evening of the FTC, with ten people
attending. The meeting was simply an update on SPES activities, and a chance for some
discussion. I am thankful to those of you who attended and I have passed along the
specific comments from the meeting to the responsible committee folks.
This is first time that I have attended all three of the meetings that SPES co-sponsors in
one year (SRC, JSM, FTC). They are all different and enable us to reach a broad
cross-section of interests among our members. The FTC is a part of the heritage of SPES,
with a focus on applications, and a smaller set of talks. The SRC attracts and energetic
group focused on applied research, and offers many different speakers. I believe it is
great to have both conferences as part of our "portfolio."
- Continuing Education - For the first time this year, we sponsored a Short Course
at the FTC. Bill Meeker gave a version of his Reliability course, and it was a huge hit,
out drawing all of the other classes (even the Six Sigma class!). I want to thank Bill for
his effort. Many folks were very happy with the class, and SPES will net fair amount of
money as well.
Many of you will recall from this summer's Exec Meeting that we did not have any strong
short course nominations for the 2001 JSM. Shane worked hard to try and build on a few of
our suggestions, but in the end Chris, Shane, and I did not feel we had strong enough
courses to risk offering. So, SPES will not be sponsoring any courses next Summer.
However, it is not too soon to be thinking about ideas for next year's FTC, or for the
2002 JSM. Let's try to come up with some good ideas!
- Proceedings - In September, the Council of Sections passed a resolution (27 to 1;
SPES voted "yes") to go to a CD-ROM proceedings for the 2001 meetings. So far it
looks like it will be a single CD volume with all the sections on it. Look for more
information in the coming year.
- Miscellaneous - Recently I visited the University of Illinois as part of the
SPES/Marquardt Industrial Speakers program. As always I enjoyed the interaction with the
students and faculty. We need to continue to find ways to promote this valuable program.
If you have ideas, please send them to Mark Vandeven....Some key dates associated with the
2001 SRC are approaching. I have attached some information about that conference to this
email.....Also, the 2001 FTC needs abstract submissions by January. Check out the SPES web
site for more details....Our membership committee has drafted a nice brochure that we can
use to provide information to new (and existing) members. We'll update you on plans for
member outreach as they are developed....Walt Morgan is trying to finish up the operating
manual by this spring. If you are contacted to provide information, please take some time
to help Walt.
I guess that's it for now. More info to come soon as we wrap up the year.
And, as always, thanks for the work you do - it makes my job much easier!

August 7, 2001 - SPES Executive Committee
Meeting
Robert G. Wilkinson
Tuesday, August 7, 2001
8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Atlanta, GA
Attendees: Chris Nachtsheim, Bob Wilkinson, Pete Hovey, Robert Rodriguez,
Chuck Bayne, Max Morris, William Li, Kwan Lee, Shane Reese, Fred Hulting, Will Guthrie,
Margie Nemeth, John Cornell, Jim Rutherford, Liz Schiferl, Joanne Wendelberger, Mark
Vangel, Russ Lenth, Dennis Lin, Bob Starbuck
- Minutes from 2000 JSM Executive Committee meeting approved unanimously.
- Financial report (Wilkinson). Our finances are in good shape. We have $29,080 on
hand at the end of May (general SPES account). We had $27,210 on hand at the end of
6/2000. We should work at moving these numbers down to around twice of our yearly expenses
(~ $19,000). The SPES/IMS account has $19,263 (5/31/2001) compared to $12,710 (6/30/2000).
The joint SPES/Q&P account has $368 (5/31/2001) compared to $1,330 (6/30/2000). The
permanent restricted and temporary restricted Marquardt funds contain $26,250 and $4,132
respectively, at the start of 2001.
- Education (Reese). We have no short course at the FTC this year. For JSM 2002,
there are 2 proposals for short courses (would like more suggestions), i.e., DOE with
Dispersion Effects, and Software Reliability. Please send course suggestions to Shane
Reese. Some suggestions at the meeting included mixture designs, (manufacturing sector)
data mining, simulation, and statistics using Excel. Looking at attendance numbers and
course feedback forms from JSM might also provide some ideas.
- Council of Sections report (Nemeth). Some highlights:
- Charter revision approved
- Step-by-step procedure for approving new sections was proposed (will vote on later this
year). SPES unanimously approves of this new process. There have been 3 new section
inquiries, i.e., statistical genetics, multivariate statistics, and bioinformatics.
- Advisory Committee on Continuing Education: Suggestions for topics would be appreciated.
October 15 is the deadline for course requests. SPES recommends that ASA looks at their
feedback forms from Continuing Education activities at JSM, and speak with the local
Sections. Also, Web-based training (e.g., PlaceWare) would be good to look into.
- Strategic Planning Committee: ASA wants to develop a system where ASA members get awards
from other organizations. Contact ASA with your input.
- Membership Task Force: Goal is to expand membership to non-statisticians, and to have a
larger international presence.
- Council of Chapters Booth: Difficult to find people to sit at the booth. There was no
interest in the proposal for SPES to take over the booth for 2-4 hours.
- Proposals for Strategic Planning Funding: Suggestions due before early 2/2002 meeting
(email on how to submit suggestions will be coming). $100,000 is available yearly.
- ASA Board of Directors: Increase in membership dues coming in 2002. The CD-ROM
proceedings should be a service, not a profit generator, and should be made available as
soon as possible (SPES view point).
- ASA Web site: A new and improved site should be available 10/1/2001 (includes LISTSERV
capabilities).
- ASA does not have up-to-date email addresses for many (50%) of its members.
- Suggestion to ASA: Benchmark other professional societies
- SPAIG (Starbuck). SPAIG and SPES have industrial speaker programs described on
the web. It was decided to hot link these web sites.
- 2001 JSM Program: Joanne Wendelberger did an excellent job with the 2001 program.
- 2002 JSM Program (Lenth)
- We have 3 allocated invited sessions (one is the Chemometrics session). We have 5
potential sessions, which leaves 2 for the competition.
- Do we want all Roundtable luncheons on the same day? (current situation)
- We will be looking into moving the Chemometrics session to the other alternating year
(when there are more session open for competition)
- Funding requests/ideas: Chris Nachtsheim will follow up to see that we offer a
student scholarship at the 2001 FTC ($400), and who is the contact for the undergraduate
data analysis award ($250). Approved items for 2002:
| Request |

| Spring Research Conference, three $400 Student Scholarships |

Other Ideas (not approved/voted on):
- Supplement JSM course instructors ($500)
- Travel support for overseas invited speakers. We need a policy here (Nachtsheim).
- Publications (Guthrie, Hovey, Rutherford, Van Mullekom).
- Newsletter was mailed out very late. We will be moving to an electronic only version by
June 2002. The main issue is having up to date email lists. To address this issue, we may
use postcards to tell the subscribers that a new online version is available, and that
they should update their email address at ASA.
- We need a process to handle the occasional inappropriate talk and paper at JSM.
- (Jennifer Van Mullekom via Liz Schiferl) We have 1 free page of advertisement space per
year in Amstat News. Articles for Amstat News are sent in on the first of the month prior
to their scheduled appearance in Amstat News. Send inputs and suggestions to jwhf@lubrizol.com.
- Fall technical Conference (Hulting). We are pursuing changes to our sponsorship
to make us a more equal partner in this conference. Handout was provided; send feedback to
Chris Nachtsheim.
- Operating Manual. Executive committee members should update this information when
your term expires.
- Awards (Guthrie, Li). William Li will be looking into alternative presentation
forum for the JSM speaker awards (to make the presentation more formal).
- Membership Committee (Schiferl). A new member brochure was developed. Send
feedback to Liz Schiferl.
- Spring Research Conference (Morris). Attendance was down this year (75 persons).
Some possible reasons for this was that it conflicted with the Interface conference, and
it's location. Nevertheless, it was a good conference. Next year, the SRC will be in Ann
Arbor, Michigan (University of Michigan is a co-sponsor).
- Membership Survey (Nachtsheim, Hulting, Bayne). It was decided to administer the
survey on-line (zoomerang.com). The cost is around $600 per year. Please send feedback on
the draft survey to Chris Nachtsheim. A brainstorm of items we would like to know from the
survey are:
- What short courses would you like to see offered?
- Do you work in academia or industry?
- What do you find most useful about SPES?
- What are your primary job duties?
- Do you want to participate in SPES?
- Do you want more information about SPES?
- What should a professional society offer its members?
- How can SPES serve your needs?
Meeting adjourned at 11:21 am.

As of 8/1/02, the SPES general account balance is $26,238.74 as compared to the 8/1/01 balance of $28,103.01. We've reduced the balance by about 2K. No new information on the Marquardt fund. Will contact Steve Porzio (ASA office to get report about Marquardt and request it be associated with the other SPES accounts on the web site in the future.
8:25 COS Report (Nemeth)
- Proceedings on CD: Pages 19,225, SPES 28 papers on CD. Allocated revenue & costs of papers on CD. SPES paid $712. Actual page charge - $ . Lost $82 on total. New proposal to change system for page totals. Allocate page charges the same way allocate costs? Proceeding sold last year 700. This year about 400 so far. Have added $10 to cost so now $35 per CD. Will add page numbers and headers, and program book. Will add $2000 to cost. Ask to advertise CD in our newsletter.
- ASA will allow section to endorse a course next year instead of co-sponsoring. Then no financial responsibility. ASA supplies monitors for courses now. Want section to supply monitor. The monitor gets in free and is usually a student. Endorsing is for advertising purposes.

- An officer of a section cannot vote to give themselves money. Conflict of interest questions contact Steve Porzio.
- Feedback:
- Electronic voting - we're skeptical about functionality

- Round table lunches - getting expensive and make no money.
