Inspire Students and Support Education

Teachers, especially at the K–12 level, need tools to help students acquire skills and generate excitement about a career in statistics. The ASA is fostering statistics education at all levels through student competitions and other special projects that generate interest in the field; professional development opportunities for educators; and online resources such as webinars, workshops, and publications for students and teachers.

Improve Public Statistical Literacy

Everyone needs to be a competent consumer of statistical information in this data-centric world. The ASA is helping by conducting national public relations campaigns, generating materials such as press releases and other resources for journalists, and conducting direct outreach to the media to ensure news stories are statistically accurate.

Provide Professional Development and Mentoring Opportunities

Statisticians need opportunities to improve their knowledge and sharpen their leadership, communication, and presentation skills to be successful. For young professionals, mentoring can be a major key to success for both the mentor and mentee. The ASA provides numerous professional development opportunities for statisticians at all levels through courses offered at meetings, computer technology workshops, web-based lectures and workshops, and traveling courses. The ASA also fosters mentoring through the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) and Conference on Statistical Practice mentoring programs, JSM docent program, Biopharmaceutical Section mentoring initiative, Washington Statistical Society mentoring program, and ASA Colleague to Colleague program.

As the voice for the statistics profession, the ASA is uniquely positioned to favorably influence policymaking decisions that rely on statistics or affect our profession. Areas affected by our work include forensic science, law enforcement, climate change, election auditing, statistics education, and federal funding.

Student and Early Career Travel Fund

Student and Early Career Travel Fund

The ASA Student Travel Fund is supported through member contributions. The purpose of the fund is to encourage students to become engaged in the statistical community through participation in ASA-sponsored professional meetings. Contributions to this fund will be pooled and used at the discretion of ASA staff to support student travel to various ASA meetings. The selection of students to support will be based on both merit and financial need.
