ASA Data Visualization Poster Competition for Grades K–12
The deadline for submitting posters is April 1.
The poster submission is now electronic with a new judging rubric. In addition to submitting your online entry form, you must upload a high-quality image or digitally created PDF file of your poster. Please ensure the image is high enough quality for all text and graphics to be read. Do not mail a physical poster. The ASA/NCTM Joint Committee on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability and the ASA’s education department encourage students and their advisers to participate in its annual Data Visualization Poster Competition.
What is a data visualization poster? A data visualization poster is a display containing two or more related graphics that summarize a set of data, look at the data from different points of view, and answer specific questions about the data.
- Students may work individually or in teams. For those in the K–3 category, there is no restriction on the size of the team. For other categories, the maximum number of students per team is four.
- For teams with members from different grade levels, the highest grade determines the entry category.
- Posters measure between 18 and 24 inches high and 24 and 30 inches wide.
- You will upload a photo/image file of a physical poster or a PDF file of a digitally created poster.
- If creating a digital poster, please follow the guidelines in the electronic poster tutorial.
- Include the grade category and title of your poster in your file name.
- Ensure the image/file is high enough quality that it can be zoomed in on and all text and graphics can be easily read.
- Make sure the poster gives no information that identifies the team or school.
- Each poster requires a separate online entry.
- Posters must be the original design and creation of the entrant(s).
- Computer graphics may be used.
- Subject matter is the choice of the participant(s) or their classmates.
- Brief supplementary information such as examples of original data, references for published data, brief descriptions of data collection procedures, and/or the purpose of the experiment may be provided in a text box in the online entry form. Do not copy and paste your actual data into the form. Please note this information might not be used in the judging, so make sure the main poster briefly provides sufficient information without being too text heavy (the updated judging criteria/rubric penalizes posters with too much text). Follow the evaluation criteria and judging rubric explained below.
- Posters must be uploaded by April 1.
- In submitting a poster, students agree the poster may be displayed at the ASA’s Joint Statistical Meetings, featured in its publications, and included on its website.
Only first-, second-, and third-place winners and honorable mentions will be notified personally. The ASA will announce winners in August on its website.
Teachers and statisticians, whose decisions are final, will judge the posters on the following:
Overall Impact of the Display (Poster Design) – Poster design aspects, colors/patterns, grammar, spelling, dimensionality, readability, neatness
Formulate Statistical Investigative Questions – Statistical question that anticipates variability leads to productive investigations (GAISE* - Step 1)
Collect/Consider Data – How useful are the data for answering the statistical investigative question? (GAISE* - Step 2)
Appropriateness of the Data Visualizations – Visualizations address the statistical question
Creativity (Topic Is of Interest) – Who cares factor
* GAISE Four-step Investigative Process: 1. Formulate Questions; 2. Collect Data; 3. Analyze Data; 4. Interpret Results (see GAISE II Pre-K–12 Report)
The updated judging criteria/rubric rewards the student(s) who uses data visualizations to support their conclusions and penalizes the use of excessive text to describe what we are supposed to see in the graphics. The revised rubric is intended to guide the students in creating a poster that formulates a statistical investigative question, collects the data appropriate to answer their question, and supports their conclusion using data visualizations, rather than text. This poster should be driven by the data visualization's ability to support the student's conclusion/answer to their statistical question.

If the submission is a collaborative effort, the prize money will be divided equally.
Also, first-place winners in grades 4–12 will receive Texas Instruments graphing calculators.

Please ensure the image is high enough quality that it can be zoomed in on and all text and graphics can be read. You will upload your poster file (image or PDF file) after you preview your entry information. Do not forget to upload your file before submitting your entry. Once you have previewed and submitted your entry information, the final screen will display your poster entry number and registration information.
Be sure the poster gives no information that identifies the team or school. A separate entry form must accompany each poster.

Regional Data Visualization Poster Competitions
Students in an area in which a regional data visualization poster competition is available may submit their posters to their regional competition. Students outside the regional competition areas should submit their posters electronically to the ASA office following the entry instructions above.
