ASA Fellowships and Grants
ASA Science Policy Fellowship
The ASA Science Policy Fellow works in Washington, DC as a member of the ASA science policy staff to elevate the profile of statistics in policymaking and advocating on behalf of the profession. The fellow is a one to two year position based at the ASA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, but spends the bulk of her/his time in Washington, advocating for statistics and experiencing first-hand how federal science policy is formed. In partnership with the director of science policy, the ASA science policy fellow will be responsible for a wide range of activities, including the following:
- Initiating and leading new advocacy topics for the ASA (preferably in collaboration with other societies)
- Advocating specific statistics-related issues to Congress, the administration, and others
- Exploring and implementing ways in which the ASA's science policy activities could be expanded to better meet its responsibilities (e.g., congressional briefings, webinars)
- Maintaining relationships with key policy officials related to statistics (e.g., U.S. Census Bureau, Hill staff, OMB, OSTP, National Academies, etc.)
- Generally supporting the dual responsibilities of ASA science policy work: raising the profile of statistics in policymaking and advocating on behalf of the statistics profession
- Attending policy-related events (e.g., congressional hearings, coalition meetings, conferences, briefings, and colloquia)
- Coordinating ASA participation in statistics and science and technology coalition events
- Speaking publicly on behalf of the ASA, especially for colloquia
- Contributing to communications to ASA members about science policy (e.g., Amstat News, Enews, social media)

ASA/NSF Federal Statistics Fellowship Program
The ASA/NSF/Federal Statistics Fellowship program is jointly supported by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The general objective of the program is to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research efforts that will continue to stimulate the development and advancement of methodology and social science research relevant to issues on which federal statistical agencies seek to provide information. The program accomplishes this by bringing academic researchers to work with statisticians and social scientists in the following three federal agencies for up to one year:
ASA/NSF/BEA Fellowship Program
The American Statistical Association, in cooperation with the Bureau of Economic Analysis, created the ASA & BEA Research Fellowship Program designed to improve the collaboration between government and academic research. The program allows research fellows to come to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, one of the world's leading statistical agencies, to use BEA data and interact with agency staff.
ASA/NSF/Census Bureau Research Program
The ASA/NSF/Census Bureau Research Program helps bridge the gap between government and academic science by bringing researchers closer to the production of data sets relevant to their research. The program allows for senior statisticians, social scientists, computer scientists, geographers, and others to come to the U.S. Census Bureau as research fellows for 6–12 months to use bureau data sets and interact with bureau staff.
ASA/NSF/BLS Fellowship Program
The ASA/NSF/BLS Fellowship Program is designed to improve the collaboration between government and academic research. The program allows research fellows to come to the Bureau of Labor Statistics to use agency data and interact with agency staff.
The American Statistical Association, in cooperation with the National Center for Health Statistics, created the ASA & NCHS Research Fellowship Program to bridge the gap between academic scholars and government health research programs. Fellows work to solve methodological problems and study analytical issues relevant to NCHS programs, data, and facilities.
