Google Named ASA Corporate Partner

The American Statistical Association is proud to recognize Google as an ASA Corporate Partner in appreciation of its generous level of philanthropic support this year.

Thanks in part to a substantial contribution from Google, the ASA was able to award the Causality in Statistics Award again this year. This award encourages the teaching of basic causal inference in introductory statistics courses and is motivated by the growing importance of introducing core elements of causal inference into undergraduate and lower-division graduate statistics classes.

Google also supported ASA DataFest, providing resources and materials for the popular student competitions around the country. During ASA DataFest competitions, teams of undergraduates work around the clock to find and share meaning in a large, rich, and complex data set. After two days of intense data wrangling, analysis, and presentation design, each team is allowed a few minutes and no more than two slides to impress a panel of judges. Prizes are given for Best in Show, Best Visualization, and Best Use of External Data.

“We’re happy to support the ASA, and recognize the value it provides for Google and for the larger statistical community. We’re a data-driven company and employ statisticians in many teams in the U.S. and abroad,” said Tim Hesterberg, senior statistician at Google.

In addition to its philanthropic contributions to ASA programs and awards, Google is also a Platinum sponsor of the 2017 Women in Statistics and Data Science Conference in La Jolla, California, and the Caucus for Women in Statistics reception at the 2017 Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore, Maryland.

Financial contributions help deliver important programs to ASA members, students, teachers, and the public. If you or your company is interested in learning more about how to become an ASA Corporate Partner, contact [email protected].
