Meeting Within a Meeting (MWM) Statistics Workshop for Mathematics and Science Teachers
Tuesday, July 30, and Wednesday, July 31, 2019
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Joint Statistical Meetings
Denver, Colorado
MWM is for middle- and high-school mathematics and science teachers who want to improve their statistics teaching within the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards through conceptual understanding, active learning, real-world data application, and appropriate use of technology. Teams from the same school are especially encouraged to attend.
Teachers will explore problems that require them to formulate questions and collect, organize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data. They also will apply basic concepts of probability and explore informal and formal formative assessments.
The MWM program includes examining what students can be expected to do at the most basic level of understanding and what can be expected of them as their skills develop and their experience broadens.
Presentations are given by prominent statistics educators, and a one-day pass is included so teachers can attend activities at the Joint Statistical Meetings* (statistics education sessions, poster sessions, exhibit hall), which take place concurrently.
Refreshments, handouts, and a certificate of participation from the ASA certifying professional development hours are included. Optional graduate credit also is available. Following the workshop, webinars are provided.
